CardShark Content - Jacob Goodisman (3/15/2006)

On the other side of the mana curve from the tourney cards, there are many huge and powerful spells. I hope this will be the first in a series exploring those. For each, I'll explain what the card does and how to play it.

The first and most interesting card is Eye of the Storm

. For 5UU, you get a nasty enchantment that removes all instant and sorcery spells played and then allows the caster to copy them. For example, if you play a Shock

attached to it. A couple of the intricacies of the Eye: the spells are played and can be countered (the countering spell gets saved and triggers the Eye as well), the Eye saves and copies all spells (your opponent's too), a player doesn't have to copy all of the spells on the Eye, and the spells are copied so X spells and other enhanced spells lose their values. Also noteworthy: many players don't know how to use it and are too lazy/dumb to understand it so they may or may not cast their spells. Also, the copies are played when the trigger spell is played, so sorceries can be played at instant speed. [Editor’s note: Not your sorceries that you play from your hand, but the sorceries already on the Eye. Just a clarification.]

There are three fundamental ways to use this. One way is to cast more cheap spells so the Eye snowballs faster. Red, Green, and Blue are the best combination for this since the colors have many cheap staple cards, like Pyroclasm

and some draw on the Eye and save themselves the time I would need to kill them. The turns for this deck can be quite long, since you're playing many spells, but it can really do some damage (once, I've killed a lieutenant and emperor in one turn). The specific numbers and cards I use don't matter.

A second way is to control the game before the Eye comes out and thus lock your opponent out of using this. Honden of Night's Reach

will be awesome in this deck since it would have few creatures and always likes blockers that it won't have to deal with later in the game.

loses them two life and gives you the two life to share if they use the Eye. Both spells can form a kill for this deck but the Syphon is more expensive, mana wise, and it’s a sorcery.

In closing, I want to point out some reasons to play this card. It’s a very fun card to play with, although less stable but perhaps more powerful than many famous tournament cards. It’s also a very cheap card to buy, 50 cents or less, so it’s not a big investment. It’s also precious when an opponent realizes his $300 deck is getting owned by a 50 cent rare.

This card will never see tournament play, right? Wrong. I’ve done some traipsing in tournaments and come out quite well. Depending on your luck with getting the Eye and what you put on it, you can lock up the game. The deck does need some major sideshows, Meloku the Clouded Mirror
