As I have made the transition from casual play to tournament play, I have made some observations which have changed my outlook on the art of deckbuilding. Here I will share the more sensible of these with you.

Firstly, there is a completely different type of deck played at tournaments. When I was playtesting my deck, I played fast red decks, which my deck did brilliantly against, white – blue and white - green control decks, which I did well against, but no mono black creature removal. These decks usually use a lot of non – targeted creature removal and a few big creatures to win in the late game. I was fortunate enough not to have come up against any of these at the last tournament I went to, but I’m going to another this weekend, and I’m not at all prepared. Those decks should make mincemeat of any big – creature deck like mine.

However, I have decided not to worry about this. This is the second thing I have noticed. A lot of decks are based around an idea, and their designers have then noticed an obvious problem with this strategy – a particular style of deck which could destroy his easily. Let me give you an example: I recently played a friend who plays a threshold based deck which uses its graveyard to win. It uses alternative victory conditions and all the good threshold cards. However, recently he noticed that his deck had problems against black graveyard destruction decks (well, duh). He could have tried to make it faster or more efficient. But instead, he splashed a whole new colour (blue) to put in some Counterspell

I’ve worried too much about controlling every game, and have slowed the deck down as a result. I know I did well in the last tournament – but this one will be harder to win, so this will be the big test of my new philosophy.

To counteract this effect within my deck, I have decided to include some more mana-acceleration cards, more one- or two drops to get me started. Going through my deck, I realize that I have no one mana cards AT ALL! I decide to change this immediately. two mana 1/1 first strike. On its own, mediocre, but in this deck –excellent. I can use it both to get out my big creatures fast, and to chump block theirs.
