CardShark Content - James Stone (11/6/2003)

After taking some time off to sell loads of small pieces of cardboard, I have come back with a new and interesting deck to report. The conception of this deck was an accident (as many conceptions are nowadays). Anyways, I was sorting through my cases of Mirrodin commons and decided it would be fun to make a peasant deck. I decided to focus on Affinity for Artifacts since the set allows for plenty of opportunity to implement it. After a few days of tweaking, here are the general results. I've only put a couple of uncommons in the deck, so there is plenty of room of ´´interpretation.´´ I'll include some general summaries of the cards for those of you who aren't too familiar with the set.

I have left 3 uncommon slots open for adding or tweaking whatever you'd like (sideboard for example)...there's a good chance you could meld this theme in with some of the other popular brain freeze/prosperity type decks. I personally just wanted to make a type 2 deck with pretty much nothing but commons that would be effective, and if you were to replace the Phyrexian walkers with Scale of Chiss-Goria (or some other interesting cheap creature), there you'd have it. Though it may not look like much on the surface, the synergy of this deck is amazing and the majority of the action takes place during the first few turns.

Here is an example of a not-so-hot looking draw:

Turn 1:
Lay the vault, cast the jar, cast the sphere. (very little action for this deck)
Turn 2:
Draw tooth of Chiss-goria. Play tooth, play both frogmites (they cast free since you've got 4 artifacts in play). Pop the sphere for a blue to draw a card and thoughtcast for two more cards. Draw an ornithopter, seat of the synod, myr enforcer. Play the seat of the synod, play the ornithopter, play the myr enforcer. Tap the seat to thoughtcast for two more cards. What do you know? . You're left with three 4/4s, two 2/2s, an ornithopter, a +1/+0 pumper, and a welding jar that can regenerate anything on the board. Not a bad turn 2!

Though this example is a bit drastic, for it is very easy the most part to get an enforcer out on turn 2, or at the very least a multitude of creatures (the hoverguards are pretty nice). If you can manage to get the lightning greaves onto your enforcer before you opponent has a chance to establish, chances are you're going to take them down (especially if you have a welding jar on top of your greaves to protect your creature).

The most ´´expensive´´ casting card is supposed to be the lightning greaves at 2 mana. Other than that, everything should be cast freely or very cheaply (though you could shell out for a myr enforcer if your artifact count just isn't cutting it). I passed up using other types of blue dig spells (thirst for knowledge, fabricate, for example) simply because they were too expensive (you might consider playing impulse instead of index if you don't care about staying type 2). To make this deck work effectively, you want to be able to dump as much of your deck out onto the board in as little time as possible, so impulse seems to be feasibly a better pick, but sometimes the first turn index can really set you up for a fast lock if your cards are right. Since all but 14 cards are considered artifacts, affinity is almost never an issue. Between the 4 Seat of Synod, 3 island, and 4 chromatic sphere, getting a blue mana for one of the 11 blue spells isn't a problem (nor would be splashing other colors for your sideboard).

You take it from here! There are a lot of different directions you could take this deck! You could easily replace the blue color theme with any other color. Black has a lot of creatures with the ´´gains +1/+0 for each artifact you control´´ attribute, which could be rather ugly. I just chose blue for the drawing capability...the thoughtcast gives early game mayhem the best odds in my opinion.

If you've found this deck concept useful, please feel free to reward me with your feedback ratings or email me your ideas! I've got plenty of copies of these decks to tweak.
