Standard PTQ Tournament Report - Jason McFarland (5/21/2009)

This weekend, I roadtripped up to Richmond, Va with two friends of mine for a PTQ that was being held there. This was my first PTQ experience and only my second big tournament (the first being a $5K a few months back that was also in Richmond). Going in to the day, I was expecting to see a fair bit of BW Tokens after there were four in the top 8 of a PTQ last weekend. I was also expecting some Blightning

, and a Bloodbraid Cascade deck. The only other event that I had played 5CC in was the last FNM at Amazing Tales (a store by NC State). I was a little bit nervous, and none of us got more than two hours of sleep, so it was a long 3 hours heading up to Richmond (leaving at 6AM). Luckily, I had the sense to stop at the grocery store to pick up some rice cakes and mini-muffins to keep me energized and focused for the day. It worked out pretty well. Once I got some food in me, I was awake and ready for the day, never really getting tired until the EIGHT rounds were done. Now, for the decklist.

Between rounds, I was talking with my friend Donovan and checking out the vendor’s booth. Suddenly I heard an announcement for round five to begin. Flustered, I ran to the pairings lists, found my name, and hoofed it over to where my match was set. I almost got a game loss for being late, but the judge said that since I was on the way, I was alright. Whew! Close call on that one. Then as I’m shuffling, I see that there are 61 cards in my deck. I look through it twice, trying to find what I hadn’t desideboarded. Finally I look at the sideboard and see only one Archmage. That silly faerie was blending in with the rest of my blue cards. Coming into round six, I knew I was on the bubble, and had gotten off easy in the last round. If I was going to make top 16 and get some prizes, I was probably going to need to win out. , while Alec was able to go Sculler, Spectral, Ajani, win. We were both openly disappointed with my lack of interaction in our final game. After signing the result slip, we stayed and chatted about our sideboards, what we thought of some decks and card choices in different situations. It was a bittersweet end to my chance at winning prizes. So, what do you do when you’re out of contention and there are EDH and draft side events to play? Keep playing in the main event to test your deck and salvage some honor, of course. On to rounds 7 and 8!

Round seven I sat across from a familiar face in Jeff, a guy from a store in Durham that I recently started going to for my FNM fix. We’d never faced each other, so this was sure to be a treat. So, I didn’t make Top 8, or even top 16 for prizes. I ended up finishing 35th out of 182. In my eyes, it was a respectable finish for one of my first big tournaments. I had a lot of fun playing the deck and getting the experience against skilled players. I was reminded of how much I still have to learn about making good plays. I also got a few ideas about how to change the deck for the future(in this current metagame). Planeswalkers can be a big problem for me, so I’m planning to switch my two Glen Elendra Archmage

. They allow me a solid counter early that can hit a lot of targets. I’m sad to say that my companions had less than stellar days, with none of them having a winning record. I look forward to testing some more this week and heading to another PTQ in Greensboro on May 30th. Hopefully I’ll have even better results to report after that tournament. I know that this was really wordy, so hopefully I can cut it down in the future. I didn’t feel like cutting a lot out, because there were some cool interactions.

Garthok out!
