CardShark Content - Jeffrey Ovadya (4/28/2006)

My friends and I really enjoy a casual game of Magic – sitting around a table, beers in hand, exploiting unique card combinations from sets dating from Revised to Ravnica. We don't care what cards you play with (except for Humility

). At a certain point though, the casual deck construction needs to be taken a step up. You want to play competitively at a local card shop or in an organized event. At last you decide to make a ´´tournament quality´´ deck.

What does it mean to make a tournament quality deck? Does it mean going and buying 4 Umezawa's Jitte

's for $70? Does it mean your deck has to have the latest and greatest cards in Type 2? Do you really have to have 4 of every dual land? The definitive answer is no. Yes, no. [Editor’s note: Not confusing at all. Yes no.] As in, sure these cards present an individual advantage in a game setting, but they do not determine who wins the game. I have never won with a Jitte, yet I seem to finish off my opponents with a Suntail Hawk

-type trickery. This deck will verily stomp all over your average Heartbeat combo, disarm R/U control, and skulk through Milling all the way home. And how much did it cost you? Maybe $10-20 if you include the rares, another $30 or so if you include the lands. Point being, you can be a veritable threat at a local tournament, and they'll never see it coming.

Now the main issue is whether or not you are willing to spend the money to incorporate the dual lands. I am not going to lie, the new Ravnica shocklands are the greatest and most well-balanced mana fixing lands to date, but that clearly comes at a price. Even though Temple Garden

is the cheapest dual land, is it worth dishing out the clams (yeah, I said clams) for a set? In my opinion, yes, but this is a cheap, two-color deck that can easily function without them. It is completely up to you.

, but this article is about winning without the metagame, so it is your choice.

Though the deck seems slow, it is very balanced and tends to win against all types of decks. No one ever expects to see land destruction in Type 2!

All in all, I think you get the point. Save your money and don't buy the Jitte, because it will soon phase out of Type 2, and the extended scene has answers to Jitte. Instead, try to have some fun and save that money for something more important like...um, life counters? Beer? Your son's college fund? Real estate investment? Or, most likely, copious amounts of Mons Goblin Raider
