I am a penny pincher. I say this up front because I want you, dear reader, to understand that I’d rather loose occasionally than pay $5 a card. I’d also rather beat my friend’s oh so loaded with rares decks with cards I picked up for under a dollar and preferably for nickels and dimes.

Since I first saw the Zubera, I’ve wanted to build a deck around them. At two mana they come out fast, they give me stuff when they die, and they are common. A bargain any way you look at it! But they are only 1/2s, so how to make them a force to be reckoned with? I thought about putting together a deck involving Soulless Revival

, but once I paired that with the mana fixing you need to use multiple Zubera and the number of Zubera needed to maximize their abilities, it didn’t really leave enough room for an offensive strategy. I put my Zubera deck aside for a while and waited for inspiration.

Soulshift! Now there’s some inspiration. The Zubera give me stuff when they die and so does everything that has soulshift. Every time I attack, my opponent not only has to consider how much damage my attackers will do, but also how each one will remember me in its will.

is amazing in this deck. With 32 spirits you end up stealing your opponent’s life and taking it for your own nearly every turn. Keep these in play as much as possible.

Of the sixteen Zubera, some people might prefer the Ashen-Skin to the Floating-Dream. If you make this change, might I suggest also changing out 2 of the Forest

? That would give you more ability to generate red and black mana without compromising your green. I really like the stability of having every land producing green. It means that sixteen of my creatures can’t be color screwed. Since I have eight white creatures, the Elfhame Palace

flies and has first strike, doing a lot of damage on decks with few flyers.

I’ve tried this deck against four different decks and so far it’s batting .500. But my little Zubera and their friends put up a strong fight every time against decks boasting much stronger creatures. It’s fun to play and there isn’t a rare in the deck. How’s that for building on a budget?
