Pack Rat's Possibility of Exhaustion - Jeremy Ricker (6/30/2013)

Hi! My name is Jeremy. I'm a casual Magic player, mostly playing EDH and occasionally helping my friends test for Standard or Modern tournaments. I haven't taken any of those Timmy Johnny Spike tests that can be found around the internet, but if I were to take a guess at my own play style, it'd be mostly Johnny and a little Spike. In EDH, I look for fun, impressive things to do, even if they don't result in my victory in any one game (an example of this: In my last EDH game, I played Devil's Play

for 9 and copied it three times with three different effects). In Standard, I'm one of those rogue deck-builders who try to find holes in the Meta and exploit them, except it never works because I try and do things a little too splashy or fancy. I would give an example of that but, instead, why don't we just go into great detail about it?

Back in October (or November, or whenever), when Return to Ravnica came out, I participated in the pre-release. In preparation for it I had looked over all of the spoilers and, after careful consideration, I chose Rakdos to be my go to guild for the day. I sat down and cracked open that fancy red and black box, and in my Rakdos guild pack I opened a Pack Rat

. Up until then I had had limited (ha, funny) experience with the sealed and draft formats of Magic, but I did recognize that the card had potential. I wasn't aware of how completely bonkers the card is in sealed/draft. Or, well, I wasn't aware until I won every single game I drew it in. Thus, my obsession with the little critter began.

For awhile, I got stuck on the idea of Rat tribal in standard. The line-up was Drainpipe Rats, Pack Rat

came out in Gatecrash, I was sure that it could happen. Unfortunately, though, the deck never took off. I wasn't able to come up with a good enough set of support spells to make the deck viable in Standard, even at my local FNM.

After a little while I decided to drop the idea. It wasn't working and I'd rather focus on EDH anyways, right? Well, that's what I did... until Dragon's Maze came out. During the pre-release for DGM, I opened a foil Possibility Storm

, completely locking my opponent out of casting spells for the rest of the game. Cool, flashy combos are fun, at least for me, so I tanked (thought a lot) on the idea. What kind of deck would an enchantment combo go well in...? I was flipping through my bulk rare binder when I found the answer. Pack Rat

Before we get too far into the crazy deck that I've whipped up, lets talk a bit about the combo itself. For those of you who don't see how they work, if you enchant your opponent with Curse of Exhaustion

and then when they reveal the second spell from their deck, they can't cast it. Your opponent literally cannot cast a single spell until one of those two cards is removed from your board which, mind you, is very hard to do without casting spells.

So this deck is clearly a combo deck, no questions asked. Seeing as you need to cast two moderately expensive enchantments, both of which cost different double colors, the deck is going to need to be controlling in order to last that late in the game and it's going to need to mount some kind of defense against your opponent's early game creatures. Also, the easiest way to maximize the chances of getting the cards is to play four of each, which creates the problem of dead draws if you draw multiple. There's a lot of things this deck needs. was so good in Limited was because of its ability to win the game on its own. All you do is play it on turn two and use it's ability to generate more Rats every turn. Eventually you have 5 5/5's and just swing for the game. This can be applied in Constructed as well, as long as you build your deck correctly. Lets start by adding a playset of our furry friend.

Being completely honest, I have yet to test this deck. It seems pretty solid, though, and a lot of fun! I'm interested to see how it does against some of the better decks in the format. If anyone wants to test this deck, go ahead! Let me know how it goes! Tweak, make adjustments, brew new decks, but most importantly, HAVE FUN!
