CardShark Content - Jerry Melton (7/16/2005)

I've been competitively playing in Type 2 for quite some time now and I have seen many decks come and go. There are usually a certain few decks that either dominate the format or make every player stop to think and wonder ´´How can my deck have a favorable win percentage against that?´´ Over the past few years, we've seen some very powerful and also very interesting decks- madness, wake, opposition, MBC, slide, goblins, affinity, and so on. They were all popular decks, but every deck eventually comes to an end either because sets rotate out or cards become banned. This is why I love standard so much- the environment is constantly changing as sets come in and out. People are always experimenting with new ideas, and new decks are always popping up to surprise people... and I believe now is one of those times to surprise people.

The deck I'm talking about is Mono-Black Control. MBC has come around in Magic history in many forms... remember Nantuko Shade

? Yes, I admit, MBC has been more powerful in the past. However, I believe that the stage has been set for a return of this great deck. Black now have access to some extremely powerful removal spells- barter in blood, hideous laughter, death cloud, and even things like oblivion stone! With that, here's my deck list:

lands and pump out extremely powerful threats as fast as possible. From my experience, tooth and nail is a fairly easy match up for MBC. The deck packs many answers to their giant creatures (barter in blood, death cloud, oblivion stone). Also, MBC has cards to stall their Urza

depending on their tooth build (sometimes it is a nice addition, and sometimes it isn't) and eradicate (which destroys any tooth creature and/or eternal witness).

Mono-Blue Control: This match is kind of difficult before sideboarding. Backed with counters and bribery/shackles, blue will most likely win. However, after sideboarding they stand almost no chance at all. Side out all of your creatures, add in the boil/mountain if you think it is needed. Most importantly, put in both boseiju. The strategy of your deck becomes stall out your opponent and cast a giant uncounterable consume spirit. Once again, depending on their build, their only win condition may be dependent on your creatures (and after side boarding you'll have zero creatures).

Ponza: Ponza is an interesting match up. MBC and Ponza is almost a coinflip. If you can drop a Night of Souls' Betrayal

, you'll be in a very good position because it ruins the majority of their deck (slith, blink moth, genju of spires, hearth kami)... and anything night doesn't kill you can take are of easily via creature kill. Although an early night is almost guaranteed win, that doesn't mean you can't win without it... but controlling the board becomes a lot more difficult. Again, depending on the build of their deck, Damping Matrix

against ponza, and maybe another hideous laughter. Again, it really depends on their build. Use your own judgment.

White Weenie: I've never had a problem with this deck. White weenie can never get the upper hand against MBC. MBC simply runs too much creature kill for them to deal with, and white weenie doesn't have enough answers to MBC's creatures. If necessary, side in another hideous laughter if it’s a really creature-heavy build. If not, try siding in more spot-removal like eradicate. Again, Damping Matrix

may be a good side card against Jitte or any other creatures they may have. I've played many versions of white weenie, and MBC beat them with ease.

Beacon Green: This deck isn't popular in my area at all. I have taken some time to test against it though, and it's not a very difficult match up. Sometimes they can go off and take you down, but I often time hold a hideous laughter in hand. The game-plan for this match is to just play the deck normally- control the game. Remove

their threats from the table and slap your own threats down. Sideboarding, I would put in a fourth hideous laughter and a second death cloud. If beacon green is really popular in your area, try using echoing decay in your sideboard.

UG Control: This is a very similar match to MUC. The main difference here is that they have disgusting cards like Plow Under

. If a UG Control player can get off a plow under or two when you don't have an arena out, you're pretty much done for. This is a more difficult match-up than mono blue for MBC, but it’s still a very beatable deck. Sideboarding is very similar to MUC except you may not have to remove your creatures. It depends on their builds.

There are definitely more decks out there, but these are the decks I have encountered the most in my experience with MBC. In general, I believe MBC is a very powerful deck and one great thing about it is that people don't run hate for it because not many people run it at all. Anyhow, I hope you enjoyed reading the article, and I hope it gave you some interesting information on my favorite deck in the format. If you have any questions or comments, feel free to e-mail me. Thanks for reading!
