What was I thinking when I made this deck? Well, before I move onto explanations, let me explain how to play this deck a little more. The goal of the deck is to use Draw/Discard cards to fill your hand up while discarding any power-house creatures you may draw. You can also get Iname, Death AspectIname, Death Aspect
|
 | Set: Champions of Kamigawa Cost: 6 Color: Black Type: Legendary Creature Sub Type: Spirit Rarity: R Number: 118 Artist: Justin Sweet Power: 4 Toughness: 4 Text: When Iname, Death Aspect comes into play, you may search your library for any number of Spirit cards and put them into your graveyard. If you do, shuffle your library. |
into play to move every beefy creature in your deck to your graveyard. Then, cast reanimates on your creatures to kill your opponent. The great thing about this deck is that you want your creatures to die once they hit play because that’s when the serious game changing effects take place. Ok, now to get a little more specific:
Iname, Death AspectIname, Death Aspect
|
 | Set: Champions of Kamigawa Cost: 6 Color: Black Type: Legendary Creature Sub Type: Spirit Rarity: R Number: 118 Artist: Justin Sweet Power: 4 Toughness: 4 Text: When Iname, Death Aspect comes into play, you may search your library for any number of Spirit cards and put them into your graveyard. If you do, shuffle your library. |
: A very powerful card in this deck. Once this hits play, you do two things. One, you fill up your graveyard with more than enough reanimation targets.... and two, you thin your deck out greatly leaving only lands, draw spells, and reanimates.
Keiga, the Tide StarKeiga, the Tide Star
|
 | Set: Champions of Kamigawa Cost: 6 Color: Blue Type: Legendary Creature Sub Type: Dragon Spirit Rarity: R Number: 72 Artist: Ittoku Power: 5 Toughness: 5 Text: Flying When Keiga, the Tide Star is put into a graveyard from play, gain control of target creature. |
: Here's the first of five legendary dragons that have massive effects when they die. The key to this deck is knowing who to reanimate and when... this one shouldn’t be too difficult: use it when your opponent has only one or few creatures- especially if they are powerful. Cast Goryo's VengeanceGoryo's Vengeance
|
 | Set: Betrayers of Kamigawa Cost: 2 Color: Black Type: Instant Sub Type: Arcane Rarity: R Number: 67 Artist: Ittoku Text: Return target legendary creature card from your graveyard to play. That creature gains haste. Remove it from the game at end of turn. Splice onto Arcane 2B (As you play an Arcane spell, you may reveal this card from your hand and pay its splice cost. If you do, add this card's effects to that spell.) |
, Keiga dies at end of turn, then gain control of a creature. Or better yet, if you have Lightning greaves, zombify/beacon Keiga (or any dragon), equip greaves, attack, use spawning pit to kill it. It's that simple.
Yosei, the Morning StarYosei, the Morning Star
|
 | Set: Champions of Kamigawa Cost: 6 Color: White Type: Legendary Creature Sub Type: Dragon Spirit Rarity: R Number: 50 Artist: Hiro Izawa Power: 5 Toughness: 5 Text: Flying When Yosei, the Morning Star is put into a graveyard from play, target player skips his or her next untap step. Tap up to five target permanents that player controls. |
: This is my personal favorite out of the five dragons, and is second best in power to Kokusho. The ability to tap 5 permanents and force your opponent to skip their untap is almost like taking a free turn after you end yours. Yeah, this card is disgusting.
Kokusho, the Evening StarKokusho, the Evening Star
|
 | Set: Champions of Kamigawa Cost: 6 Color: Black Type: Legendary Creature Sub Type: Dragon Spirit Rarity: R Number: 122 Artist: Tsutomu Kawade Power: 5 Toughness: 5 Text: Flying When Kokusho, the Evening Star is put into a graveyard from play, each opponent loses 5 life. You gain life equal to the life lost this way. |
: The main man in the deck, Kokusho, the Evening StarKokusho, the Evening Star

You gain life equal to the life lost this way. |
can deal massive damage to your opponent while bringing you back into the game with life gain. He's also black, making him resistant to cards like terror, dark banishing, and eradicate! Just be careful with kiku's shadow or hero's demise... but that's why you have lightning greaves! As I said earlier with Keiga, these dragons (all of the beefy creatures for that matter) 'combo' extremely well with spawning pit and lightning greaves.
The UnspeakableThe Unspeakable

 | Set: Champions of Kamigawa Cost: 9 Color: Blue Type: Legendary Creature Sub Type: Spirit Rarity: R Number: 98 Artist: Khang Le Power: 6 Toughness: 7 Text: Flying, trample Whenever The Unspeakable deals combat damage to a player, you may return target Arcane card from your graveyard to your hand. |
: Not the most amazing creature in the deck, this guy does have his uses. If you reanimate him with Footsteps of the GoryoFootsteps of the Goryo
|
 | Set: Saviors of Kamigawa Cost: 3 Color: Black Type: Sorcery Sub Type: Arcane Rarity: U Text: Return target creature card from your graveyard to play. Sacrifice that creature at end of turn. |
or Goryo's VengeanceGoryo's Vengeance

 | Set: Betrayers of Kamigawa Cost: 2 Color: Black Type: Instant Sub Type: Arcane Rarity: R Number: 67 Artist: Ittoku Text: Return target legendary creature card from your graveyard to play. That creature gains haste. Remove it from the game at end of turn. Splice onto Arcane 2B (As you play an Arcane spell, you may reveal this card from your hand and pay its splice cost. If you do, add this card's effects to that spell.) |
you basically get a free hit in because he can return your arcane spells to your hand... or if you can keep him on the table, you'll be able to keep the pressure on your opponent with reanimates that keep coming back.
Unl1c2VpLCB0aGUgFalling StarFalling Star
|
 | Set: Legends Cost: 3 Color: Red Type: Sorcery Rarity: R Artist: Douglas Shuler Text: Flip Star onto the playing area from a height of at least one foot. Star must turn at least 360 degrees or it has no effect. When Falling Star lands, Falling Star does 3 damage to each creature that it touches. Any creatures damaged by Falling Star that are not destroyed become tapped. |
: Another terrific card in this deck, Ryusei is able to clear the board of all creatures with 5 or less toughness! Not too shabby.
Goryo's VengeanceGoryo's Vengeance
|
 | Set: Betrayers of Kamigawa Cost: 2 Color: Black Type: Instant Sub Type: Arcane Rarity: R Number: 67 Artist: Ittoku Text: Return target legendary creature card from your graveyard to play. That creature gains haste. Remove it from the game at end of turn. Splice onto Arcane 2B (As you play an Arcane spell, you may reveal this card from your hand and pay its splice cost. If you do, add this card's effects to that spell.) |
: A disgusting instant-speed arcane reanimate with splice. What more could you want?
Footsteps of the GoryoFootsteps of the Goryo
|
 | Set: Saviors of Kamigawa Cost: 3 Color: Black Type: Sorcery Sub Type: Arcane Rarity: U Text: Return target creature card from your graveyard to play. Sacrifice that creature at end of turn. |
: Another reanimate spell in this reanimator deck, this is also an arcane... giving it the potential of being spliced with Goryo's VengeanceGoryo's Vengeance
|
If you do, add this card's effects to that spell.) |
. The fact that your creature dies at end of turn is not a problem at all. Get a hit in if you have greaves before your creature dies, and then leave behind a powerful effect with your ´´When this creature is put into a graveyard from play´´ effects!
Beacon of UnrestBeacon of Unrest
|
 | Set: Fifth Dawn Cost: 5 Color: Black Rarity: R Number: 41 Text: Sorcery. Put target creature or artifact card in a graveyard into play under your control. Shuffle Beacon of Unrest into its owner's library. |
: With all of the draw this deck runs and how thin your deck becomes after an Iname comes into play, the fact that this card shuffles back into your deck is terrific! Yes, it costs one more mana than zombify... but it's worth it. It can also target an opponenet's graveyard if needed... and artifacts.
ZombifyZombify
|
 | Set: Odyssey Cost: 4 Color: Black Type: Sorcery Rarity: U Number: 171 Artist: Mark Romanoski Text: Return target creature card from your graveyard to play. |
: A very simple reanimate, but still a reanimate! This is my least favorite reanimate of the four, but it's definitely not bad.
ThirstThirst

IGZvciBLbm93bGVkZ2U=: A godly draw card- three cards for three mana at instant speed that allows you to discard two cards is amazing in this deck. Discarding isn't always a bad thing for this deck, so make sure you take advantage of effects like that.

|
 | Set: Fifth Dawn Cost: 2 Color: Blue Type: Creature Sub Type: Human Wizard Rarity: C Number: 38 Power: 1 Toughness: 1 Text: Tap: Draw a card, then discard a card from your hand. |
: This little guy keeps this deck going. Early game he draws into your deck while discarding any unneeded creatures, and late game he can keep your reanimates rolling in by drawing an extra card every turn. Terrific.
Ideas UnboundIdeas Unbound
|
 | Set: Saviors of Kamigawa Cost: 2 Color: Blue Type: Sorcery Sub Type: Arcane Rarity: C Text: Draw three cards. Discard three cards at end of turn. |
: Although this card doesn't net you any card profit, it does dig three cards into your deck and allows you to discard a lot of creatures. Also, it's an arcane (possible goryo's vengeance splice target).
Spawning PitSpawning Pit
|
 | Set: Darksteel Cost: 2 Color: Colorless Type: Artifact Rarity: U Number: 141 Artist: Tony Szczudlo Text: Sacrifice a creature: Put a charge counter on Spawning Pit. 1, Remove two charge counters from Spawning Pit: Put a 2/2 Spawn artifact creature token into play. |
: This card is amazing in this deck. The ability to sacrifice a creature at any given time for two mana is just disgusting. Remember, most of the creatures in this deck have powerful abilities when they die!
Lightning GreavesLightning Greaves
|
 | Set: Mirrodin Cost: 2 Color: Colorless Type: Artifact Sub Type: Equipment Rarity: U Number: 199 Artist: Jeremy Jarvis Text: Equipped creature has haste and can't be the target of spells or abilities. Equip 0 (0: Attach to target creature you control. Equip only as a sorcery. This card comes into play unattached and stays in play if the creature leaves play.) |
: This card helps against creature bounce/kill... but it also lets you get in a hit with creature on the first turn when you play zombify, beacon, or footsteps of the goryo. Amazing in this deck.
IslandIsland
|
 | Set: Oversize Cards Color: Land Type: Land Rarity: X Artist: Tony Roberts Text: T: Add U to your mana pool. |
: Used to play blue spells... yeah.
SwampSwamp
|
 | Set: Oversize Cards Color: Land Type: Land Rarity: X Artist: Tony Roberts Text: T: Add B to your mana pool. |
: Like an island, but black! How can you go wrong!?
Mirrodin's CoreMirrodin's Core

 | Set: Darksteel Color: Land Type: Land Rarity: U Number: 165 Artist: Greg Staples Text: T: Add 1 to your mana pool. T: Put a charge counter on Mirrodin's Core T, Remove a charge counter from Mirrodin's Core: Add one mana of any color to your mana pool. |
: Now here's a great card. Taps for colorless whenever you need it, and when it’s not in use it can build up counters. For those of you out there that want to use 9th, you could try underground river... but personally, I never have mana problems with this deck. The core does the job.
Sideboard:
A little note on the sideboard. The current Type 2 (Mirrodin block, Kami block, 8th/soon to be 9th) is a very odd one indeed. Decks are changing extremely fast- one week jitte control is dominating everything, the next week its white weenie, and whoa, the next its mono red! Maybe not exactly like that, but you get the point. The environment is constantly changing, and fast! It's very difficult to decide what to sideboard anymore, so I chose to have a sideboard to kill off the deck's weaknesses. I didn't build a sideboard to cripple another deck. I'll list the sideboard cards and when you should side them in. Depending on your area, the sideboard can change dramatically... so test this stuff yourself!

. This isn't the monsterous sac engine that spawning pit is, but still a great card and it gets the job done at instant speed for only 2 (and hey, it nets you 3 life).

. More reanimate targets in your deck makes it harder for a deck running extraction to shut you down.
Well, there you have it. A T2 Reanimator... and it is definitely very powerful! This deck smashes most decks I have ever played against, however, it has trouble against the fastest decks in the environment... so watch out for that. Not only does this deck do very well with Mirrodin/Kami/8th, it also works very well if you tweak it slightly for Kami/9th! Once Ravnica comes out (the next MTG set for those of you who don't know, it is coming out late October), I'm sure this deck will find new cards to add to it. For my next article, I'll probably go in 'intense detail' with the little (but very interesting) information that I have compiled on the next three magic sets, so stay tuned! If you have any questions or comments, feel free to e-mail me. Thanks for reading!
