Making Snackrifices - Jesse Bradford Smith (2/17/2010)

Before we begin this article, as it is my first and hopefully not my last time (be gentle), an introduction is in order. My name is Jesse, I’m going to be twenty-four this month, and I’ve been playing this amazing game for over twelve years. I live in Michigan, and I like to think of myself as something of a Vorthosian Johnny-Timmy.

Now, class, let’s set our time machines for 1997, jump in, and flash back to when this old fogey was just starting to play Magic: the Gathering.

Tempest had just been released, and I had been collecting the cards for almost a year because I liked the pictures and the flavor text. Some of my friends who played the game saw how many I had and encouraged me to learn how to play as well. It would be a while before I was any good – I thought regeneration could bring creatures back from the graveyard after they had been sent there earlier and couldn’t figure out how banding or phasing worked to save my life. [Editor’s note: I still don’t know how those work, so don’t feel bad.] However, I immediately understood combos. The first card that really caught my eye to build a decent deck around was Fallen Angel

Alright, now that we have that little bit of history covered, I should show you the card list for the current incarnation of my deck.

I find all cards that make creatures out of lands strictly inferior in this case to Life//Death, as they don’t have an optional reanimation effect to play instead if they aren’t what you need at the moment. Also, there are two other reasons: One being that Squirrel Tribal is absolutely hilarious (and another deck I played back in the days of Odyssey Block being Standard-legal), and two being that I own a beautiful set of pewter Squirrel tokens from www.dark-platypus.com and like to use them whenever I can.

It forever changed the way that I think about my deck – I now often envision a gunfight between the police and several deranged squirrel sharpshooters. If somebody can find that picture and send me a link, they’ll be my favorite person for the entire day.

“Sacrilege” also works nicely with color splashes. White and blue are better than red for this deck in my opinion, so for simplicity’s sake I’ll only cover white and blue splashes here.

I’m sure that if you play this deck you’ll come up with plenty of ideas of your own for improving it and making it yours, so I won’t carry on. I hope you have fun with “Sacrilege” and I hope you enjoyed my nostalgia-ridden article. Thanks for reading! Here’s hoping I can write more articles in the future.
