CardShark Content - Joel Stob (8/5/2002)

Welcome to the first article of what will hopefully be a continuing series of articles about my insane Magic ideas, rants, decks and “Tech.” Today I will focus on my deck for this past Grand Prix Trial in Chicago for Cleveland.

The most important thing about this deck is that it crushes mono-black. I banked on a heavy mono-black field or at least a bunch of top players playing it. Fortunately I was right. After rolling first round I sit down across from a great player from our area Scott Herzberg playing mono black and just crush him because its such a great match up for me.

How do you play this piece of crap anyway?

General Tips

When calculating the damage you can do if you have the blitz in the graveyard just multiply the (mountains in play)-(available blockers) by your cards in hand. This takes into effect the fact that you don’t discard the rites in your hand to the rites and the fact that the cats have a power of 1 already.

Got all that?

and try next turn. Use your judgement of course but don’t come crying to me if you go off too early against mono black and the turn after they morbid hunger you you find the firebolt.

U-G (threshold or quiet roar)

Thankfully most UG players don’t know how to play against this deck so you have an advantage already. First if you see a rootwalla or two early and a mongrel on the board count your blessings because holding rootwallas back can keep them alive. First game you have a good chance if they play aggresively. Take beatings till you get low while making them take Breaking Point

If they are a good player (like Mike Herberholtz who I played 5th round) They will keep back creatures and answers so this becomes more like a 35-65 instead of a 60-40 matchup

If you can go off turn 4 there is almost no way they can stop you. The real reason that you can’t lose is the ability called haste. Monoblack relies on sorcery creature removal so haste beats it. I made that mistake in top eight and it cost me the match. I haven’t done extensive playtesting but I think there is a pretty good chance of pulling it out if you try to race and run them out of counters. At the trial I lost in top eight to psychatog and that was the only one I played.

held back. It is hard for you to win. If it weren’t for prismatic strands this matchup would be fine but 1st game it’s hard to win. Be wary of Morningtide

After sideboard this match turns around. There is nothing better than having all three of the important flashback spells turned over on a bookburning. If you can cast all these on the same turn or even just flaring pain you can easily win. Again play around morningtide whenever possible.

So you wan’t to beat my deck?

1. Hold creatures back.
If you swing aggressively with no support or little support you will lose.

2. Always do the math.
Figure out each time you pass the turn weather I can beat you or not, taking answers in your hand into account.

3. Don’t be fooled if there is no blitz in the graveyard.

4. Almost always let me flip for Bookburning.

5. Never let me draw for browbeat

6. Don’t play monoblack.
