I’ve been spending a lot of time, ok way too much time, reading on line articles. I am sick and tired of the articles that go like this “Well in game two I lost because my deck decided it didn’t like mana.” Then we continue to hear how they won and with what. I started playing Magic when Ice Age came out, and seriously started playing during Urza

block, that was high school for me. Players who know how to play don’t want a play by play, or a turn by turn account of the game.

We want to read about your deck. We want to hear did it win, its record, why did it win, why did it loose, what it did well against, what it did poorly against, and how you plan on changing it.

When I played states I brought Death on a stick, my U/G agro. I figured that it did so well in OBC and standard that it would do well at states. No, no it did not. You see I made three mistakes preparing. First I did not figure that every one and the grandma would be gunning for U/G (ya I know it was dumb). Second for some unknown reason I only read the spoiler, neglecting to look for new devastating combos. Third I saw astral slide, but did not play test with or against one.

My day went 2-3 drop. U/G still has amazing speed that is very difficult to deal with. I lost due to the resurgence of Braids and when you slide a token it goes bye-bye. The deck stomped the new tog, white weenie, and other U/G, but sligh, astro glide and LD destroy it.

Destroy target enchantment. Flashback G

Death on a stick revolves around finding wurms with a speculation, wish for a wonder, and pitch it for the win. Yes unoriginal, uninspired, but it worked well. My build has lots of counter, and I got tired of blocking things so I use a fare amount of bounce to clear the board before an opponent attacks. I have had several people look through the deck and say that living wish should go and main deck four wonder. The living wish makes the deck very adaptable and a threat to almost every major archetype played. Also in play testing I found that Haunting Echoes

screws U/G agro. If my deck gets echoed I do not loose the wish or the wonder. Thus providing an extra layer of shielding.

Although this deck was solid before states, my current plans are to burry it in a shallow grave. I’m sad to say quiet roar has seen it’s last day. My new deck, which was not put together until after states, that I wanted to run is similar to the one that took states in North Carolina.

The new standard is all about speed. The faster, and more consistently, you can damage an opponent and/or his creatures the harder and longer it will take to stabilize. If you look at the top 4 decks from states you’ll see a trend, speed. U/G, white weenie, Astro Glide, and lots of agro type decks. Decks that that need turn 5 and 6 to stabilize get their butts handed to them. With speed being the key to success any strategy that uses cards that casts for more than 4 mana should be on the list to be cut.

This new standard grasps my heart and squeezes. You see at my core I am a blue control player. Beginning with odyssey counter magic has been neglected, like a redheaded stepchild. With counter magic being sub-par crazy stupid speed and beats have been able to dominate the playing field. With a counter less environment on the horizon speed and creature recursion become key to absolute domination of the game.

Thanx for the read
