CardShark Content - John Mourino (3/11/2005)

My first article showed a few tricks in limited, but really didn’t give much advice on building a limited deck. So, you got all your cards organized by color and converted mana cost (and all known unplayables flipped), what then? What happens now? First, a good limited pool should always have:

Creatures- The stuff that usually takes up the most space (beside land). Usually, you’re aiming to have an average of 15 creatures in your sealed deck.

Removal- This is important, too, because sometimes you need to remove a problematic card in order to win. Try to have at least 4 removal cards in your deck. Most bombs win the game when they hit the board, unless, of course, the bomb is removed or they are already losing by too much. This is where removal will help you out a lot (However, using your removal against smaller creatures like Kitsune Blademaster

or Soratami Mirror-guard is justified since these critters can cause a lot of damage to you). This becomes more complicated, though, as the Betrayers’ set introduces a new bomb artifact (Umezawa’s Jitte). Be careful of this menace!

Tricks- This includes mana acceleration (Kodama’s Reach), early tricks (Kodama’s Might, Indomitable Will

). I would even classify all of the equipment as ‘trick’ cards. All except, of course, Umezawa’s Jitte since the Jitte can count as removal, a finisher, and a random life-gain thrown in for kicks! An average deck would be able to run 3 trick cards, but be aware that this number can vary.

Lands: Most decks usually need 5 or 6 mana down. My suggestion is to run 18 lands or 17 lands because being in a mana screw situation (not enough lands) is something that is very hard to get out of. However, if you are in a mana flood situation (too many lands), you will usually draw out of it.

*Another important factor would be to know the cards for the set. Try to know all of the bombs, as well as the good removal to look for.

-Now, time to start building! First, choose a color (not randomly of course!!), and put all the playables of that color in a new pile. Choose a second color, and put all of the playables of that color in the same pile. At this point, you’ll probably be way over 22 cards, but that’s OK. Now, its usually important to splash for a 3rd color because that particular color has important removal cards, but that same color doesn’t have any good creatures, etc (this often happens with red). Splashing 4 lands of that color usually does not cause a problem, especially if you have mana fixers in your deck. Plus, the extra removal will benefit your matches greatly.

-The next step is to cut cards until you have 22 (for 18 lands) or 23 (for 17 lands) cards. Its important to make sure you spread out your mana curve. This means to have an even number of 2 and 3 casting cost cards. Then, you would have less cards cost 4, then 5, etc. There is really only one way to make sure you choose the correct cards to keep in your build, and that is by participating in forums like Starcitygames or Brainburst online.

-The last step is to make sure that you didn’t make any wrong choices with card selection and color selection. Search through everything (even unplayables) to make sure you didn’t miss anything. This was one mistake I made with my previous decklist I posted. First, here is my list:

Mistake #1: First I don’t have enough creatures. 13 creatures is barely enough!

Mistake #2: Splashing creatures is something you want to avoid. Sometimes, you have no choice, but red is my splash color, and I have a red 2 mana drop creature in my build. This can cause some problems for this deck.

Mistake #3: As I mentioned before, I didn’t take a second look at my blue pool and my white pool. Here are some blue goodies I missed:

Comments on Betrayers!
-3/3's for 3 mana are generally the way to go. They come out early game and pressure the opponent. Sunburst myr back in mirrodin block was a very playable card. However, be aware of large blockers!
