For the most part, Peasant Magic is dominated by aggressive decks. At last year's Gen Con, the defining deck was Sligh and Stompy and White Weenie also did well. There were no Combo decks and no islands to be seen in the top decks. In the interest of expanding the deck types in Peasant format, I've been recently testing a deck that can beat two out of three of the top decks and it's both combo and islands-based: a High Tide

Before we get to the deck discussion: first, the news.

PEASANT NEWS

I. TWO PEASANT TOURNAMENTS

Although the Peasant Magic yahoo discussion group has been quiet for a few months, a number of major gaming tournaments are coming up which promise to revive interest in my favorite casual format. I have it from a reliable source that Card-shark could be sponsoring something at Origins and co-sponsoring the Peasant tourney at Gen Con with Rob, Peasant format originator. Origins is July 4th to 7th in Columbus, Ohio and Gen Con is scheduled for August 8th through 11th in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. You can check out the Wizards of the Coast website for more information about these events.

If you can get to either of these major gaming conventions, start making your plans now so you can take advantage of advanced booking prices for travel. I currently plan on attending Origins, so I will hopefully see you there!

II. NEW TOURNAMENT RULES

Rob has posted revised tournament rules for Peasant Format at Rob's official Peasant Format site and at Yahoo Groups: Peasant format. They basically modernize Peasant format tournaments, so that we play with modern mulligan rules (instead of land mulligan) and with a 15 card sideboard (5 Uncommons total in the deck + sidebaord).

I commend Rob for making these changes, which have been widely discussed in the Yahoo Peasant Magic list serve. Peasant is a casual format, which means fun is prioritized and no one thinks it's fun to lose because you don't draw any land. Modern mulligan rules helps avoid that from happening too often.

Using a colorless damage source as your win condition has several significant advantages. First, it does not require an additional colored mana source. Regardless of the metagame, for the combo-seeker in many of us, High-Tide currently seems to be the strongest Combo deck in Peasant Format.
