PEASANT TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS

Congratulations to Man ´´Sandy´´ Tsoi for winning the Peasant Magic Tournament at Origins in Columbus, Ohio on July 6, 2002. Sandy piloted his mono-black deck past 24 other Peasant players in the second ever Peasant Magic tournament at a major gaming convention.

The results of the Origins Peasant tournament are of interest for the growing Peasant community and for anyone who might be able to attend one of the two upcoming Peasant tournaments: One upcoming tourney will be on August 10th at Gen Con in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and one modified Peasant tournament at the Texas A&M in College Station, Texas on September 8. For details of these two events, see www.geocities.com/peasantmagic/tourneys.htm.

The decklists of the top eight have already been released and can be found in the first post-tournament article by myself and Marcus Anderson. See http://www.card-shark.com/content/view_article.asp?article_id=636

SOME CAVEATES: WHAT ORIGINS WAS NOT

Before we begin the analysis of Origins, it's important to note that due to the rules used at Origins, the tournament was not a true test of the Peasant format because it did not follow true Peasant magic rules as outlined on the official Peasant Magic website and discussed on the Peasant Magic yahoo-group (listserve).

1. ORIGINS TOURNEY NOT PURE PEASANT MAGIC

Because of a communications mix-up, the Peasant Tournament at Origins was listed as a Type I legal tournament and registrants were told throughout the convention that rarity would be ´´worst case senario,´´ meaning if a card had two different rarities in different sets, it's considered the more rare of the two. For those familiar with Peasant Magic, you'll recognize that these two rules do not correspond to normal Peasant Magic rules, as discussed on the Peasant Magic Listserve. This rules discrepancy lead to some last minute deck changes for those who brought decks using the more liberal official Peasant Magic rules (no banned and restricted list, able to use Portal and Unglued; ´´best case scenario´´ commonality).

2. ORIGINS WAS NOT A TEST OF PEASANT POWER CARDS

Because of the altered format, the Origins Tournament was not a true test of some of the more unusual aspects of the allowable cards in traditional Peasant Magic. Thus, Orgins was not a demonstration of any of the following:

a) THE POWER OF 4 LIBRARY OF ALEXANDRIA. Matthew Crowfoot, who was playing a strong R/U Wall deck he designed around 4 Library of Alexandria

had to remove 3 Library's because it's restricted in Type I. This severely weakened his deck and Matt ended up 11th place playing the weakened version of his deck.

ASIDE: There has been considerable discussion about the appropriateness of being able to play 4 Library in a Peasant deck. Marcus Anderson's position is that the card is too powerful because it can go in any deck and it goes against the spirit of Peasant Magic to allow 4 copies of a $75 card. My position was that Matt should be allowed to play them so that it can be demonstrated at a tournament that Library is so powerful, everyone will call for Library to be restricted in the format. Because only 1 Library could be used at Origins, Matt was not given an opportunity to prove to the Peasant community that Library should be restricted.

TOURNAMENT ANALYSIS: DECKS PLAYED

DECK VARIETY: DECK COLORS

One of the pleasures of playing in an alternative format like Peasant Magic is the deck variety one faces. One way to see the variety of decks is to see view the colors in the decks.

Mono-White 5
Mono-Red 4
Mono-Green 3
Mono-Blue 1
U/R 2
G/W 1

To summarize, there were: 19 Mono-Colored Decks
6 Multi-Colored Decks

That means that no one color or color combination made up more than 25% of the field, although mono-black was the most popular selection. I admit I was surprised by the heavy black turnout, but it should not have been given the powerful card choices in Black and Marcus Anderson's recent article discussing Black in Peasant magic. Mono-Black, White, and Red decks were the most popular decks in the tournament.

Although most decks were mono-colored, 6 brave souls played two-color decks, including two players who both chose to play the Blue/Red (U/R) color combination by focusing on the ´´Prodigal Sorcerer

given the rules confusion.

TOP-8 DECKS BY COLOR

Once we cut to Top 8, we find that all the top decks were mono-colored, verifying the common wisdom that this format is so fast (and the color smoothing so limited) that mono-colored decks are the most consistent.

The decklists for the Top 8 Decks are already available here: www.cardshark.com/content/view_article.asp?article_id=636.

Color #
Mono-White 4
Mono-Black 3
Mono-Red 1

The top eight results show that the most popular colors also ended up in the Top 8, which seems to suggest that, in general, players had an accurate assessment of the most powerful colors of the format. The Top 8 deck color match-ups looked like this:

Round 1 – deck color, (name)

White (J. Lai)
White (J. Woehler)
Winner: Woehler

Black (J. Allison)
Black (Tsoi)
Winner: Tsoi

White (D. McClain)
Black (A. Fischer)
Winner: Fischer

White (I. Port)
Red (P. Phillips)
Winner: Phillips

Round 2

White (J. Woehler)
Black (Tsoi)
Winner: Tsoi

Black (A. Fischer)
Red (P. Phillips)
Winner: Phillips

Finals

Red (P. Phillips)
Black (Tsoi)
Winner: Tsoi

As you can see above, White decks were all but eliminated in the first round of the Top 8, except for the mirror match-up (where one of the two white decks obviously had to win). Confirming the power of the mountain, the only red deck (a deck with no sideboard!) made it to the finals. While a white deck won last year's first ever Peasant Tournament at Gen Con, a Black deck rose to the top at Origins.

SANDY WINS THE MATCH!

CONCLUSION

Red and White decks have been significant in both the Gen Con Top 9 and the Origins Top 8, but Black decks replaced Green decks at Origins. Gen Con had 2 Red decks and 4 white decks, including the winning deck. Gen Con’s Top 9 decks had three Green decks, including one that finished second place, but there were NO black decks in the Top 9 at Gen Con. For Gen Con Top 9 decklists, see: http://www.geocities.com/peasantmagic/gcwin.htm. By contrast, half of the Origins Top 8 were Black decks and there were no Green decks in the Top ranks at Origins. While there were 3 white decks at Origins and only 1 Red deck, it was the Red deck that made it to the Finals.

How did we get from no black decks in the top 8 last year to Black dominance at Origins? Although White has powerful common-slot protection against red and black, the mono-Black and Red decks in the Top 8 were able to beat out White decks, including ones packing main-deck hate (such Crimson Acolyte

s), to advance to the Top 4. The old adage may be true here: the best defense is a good offense. Perhaps Black and Red's aggression and creature removal are better than the protection than white can afford.

Is Red so strong but so expected that it's too weak to finish on top? This tournament had surprisingly few red decks, only 4 out of 25 decks. Moreover, unlike last year's Gen Con, the Origins tournament allowed sideboards, which hurts ´´expected´´ decks like red Sligh. Nevertheless, a relatively traditional Sligh deck made it to the Finals, even with the disability of having no sideboard. Sligh is still a force to be reckoned with.

What happened to Green? Green was a significant part of the top Eight last year, but it was non-existent at this year's top eight. Green's lack of removal may be too great a disability to overcome in a format where creatures turning sideways are the key to almost every game.

Is Blue still the lost cause of Peasant Magic? If the tournament results are any indication, perhaps. However, I still maintain there are viable blue decks. I was very close to playing my Whispers Control deck (See www.card-shark.com/content/view_article.asp?article_id=472), but because of the rule discrepancies discussed, the deck was not easily adapted since I could not play 4 Mishra

. Moreover, one of my main concerns, Rebel decks, apparently is not as popular as I thought it would be since I was the only one playing it at Origins despite my Top 9 finish at Gen Con with it.

Is there a dominant color or colors in Peasant format? As you can see from the TOP 4 match coverage, even the top players made some mistakes which could have tipped the matches one way or the other. Thus, each of the colors (except possibly blue) seem viable depending on the metagame at a particular tournament and the play skill and play-test skills of the particular player. I look forward to seeing the format mature and develop during the two upcoming Peasant Tournaments. Good luck to all those attending Gen Con!
