The Champions of Kamigawa Snake's Path preconstructed deck is a good deck as most preconstructed decks are. They are not made to dominate but to provide a decent deck for casual play as well as promote the other products in the set. For those of you who may not remember, here is the card list for the Snake's Path Deck:

The first thing that many of you will notice is that this is a 64 card deck instead of the usual 60. I typically tend to go over the 60 card minimum and though having too many cards can severely ruin your draw phase, I find that a well balanced 60-65 card deck allows you to add a few more cards without severely affecting your draw. In this case, multiple tests haves proven this deck sufficiently balanced to function with the extra cards. Next, this deck was not developed by modifying the Snake's Path deck. This really is just a case of divergent evolution, and though they may seem superficially similar, the two function fundamentally different. I will continue to refer back to the preconstructed deck as a basis for comparison as I continue on through my discussion of the individual cards in the deck.

This deck contains four less lands than the Snake's Path deck and four more cards overall. This is mainly because this deck has more options in mana acceleration, which allow you to play the extra cards with the fewer lands.

- Shidako, Broodmistress (2) cost: 2G

The Eggwatcher is critical in this deck and I wonder why I only have two in here. The truth is that the Eggwatcher is one of the quicker ways to victory in the deck. Use the Eggwatcher's ability to create your 1/1 snake token. If you have any of the legendary snakes, Sosuke, Sachi, or Seshiro, that 1/1 token could be as big as 4/4, which is always helpful. Also, since both the Eggwatcher and Shidako are shamans, you can tap it for GG if you have Sachi in play. As the Broodmistress, you are given a clear path through victory. With all the snake tokens into play, you'll have plenty of disposable creatures and mana. Simply attack with everything, wait until blockers are declared, then sacrifice everything to an unblocked creature. You could easily swing for a good 20-30 points of damage, which is usually enough to win you the game.

A new staple of many green decks, the elder is a good creature to have early in the game, use it as a blocker, then sacrifice it for the forest. Of course, if you play one of these later in the game, it is a shaman, so you can use it in conjunction with Sachi as a source of two green mana.

Kashi-Tribe Warriors (2) cost: 3GG

The Kashi-Tribe Warriors are expensive, there's no denying that. However, given the amount of mana you can produce in a short amount of time, you should be able to get this hefty 2/4 (plus whatever legendary snake bonuses you have in play) into play easily. Then, take into consideration its ability that helps you lock your opponent down by preventing your opponent's creatures from untapping as normal. On top of that, it’s a warrior, so when Sosuke comes into play, you've got a large creature that can destroy all but indestructible creatures.

Kashi-Tribe Reaver (2) cost: 3G

The Reaver is a good creature to have for many of the same reasons as the Kashi-Tribe Warriors. Of course, you do trade away the higher defense of the Warriors for the higher attack and Regenerate

The Orochi sustainer is another good creature early in the game that retains its usefulness later on. The creature is cheap with a decent 1/2 power and toughness. On top of that, you can tap it for one green mana. Being a shaman, you can double the mana it produces once you have Sachi in play.

Sosuke is the opposite of Sachi, he gives your snake a +1/+0 bonus as well as allowing your warriors to destroy just about any creature they deal damage to.

Sakura-Tribe Springcaller (2)

The Shaman equivalent of the Kashi-Tribe Warriors, the Springcaller shares the same stats as the Warrior, making it the beefiest shaman in the deck. The Springcaller also produces one Green Mana at the beginning of your upkeep that does not empty nor produce mana burn as your phases end, which allows you to use it to play spells during both your main phases as well as your combat phase. It is also a shaman so you can use it to produce even more mana with Sachi in play.

(1) cost: 6GG

The largest and most expensive creature in the deck is actually one I attack with very rarely. Its special ability effectively doubles your mana and allows you to keep your creatures untapped so you're not left vulnerable during your opponent's combat phase. If push comes to shove, he's an effective blocker and attacker should you need it.

Matsu-Tribe Decoy (1) cost: 2G

The Decoy lets you selectively tap (or destroy, if you have Sosuke in play) a creature your opponent controls. Unfortunately the Decoy's 2G ability is not as good as Provoke

, which let's you untap a creature your opponent controls and force it to block for free, but it does its job, and it has decent toughness to boot.

Matsu-Tribe Sniper (2) cost: 1G

The sniper would have to be my least favorite snake, simply because its use is somewhat limited, but at the same time vital. The sniper allows you to ping a flying creature, forcing it to tap and remain tapped during its controller's next untap phase. Had it been able to target any creature it would be one of my favorites, but it’s still critical in anti-air defense.

This card is especially useful on your first turn or if you just aren't drawing anything good. You look at the top five cards of your library and choose a creature and put it in your hand. The rest of the cards go to the bottom of your library. Of course, there are those times when you may not have a creature coming up in those five cards or you may be forced to move a helpful spell in those five cards to the bottom of your library, but those are the risks.

This card seems a little out place, I'll admit, but it has its uses. When it comes into play, imprint one of the legendary snakes, preferably Seshiro, and produce the copy immediately if possible. Why not just play the creature, you ask? Because when it is imprinted, you can produce a back up should your legendary snake be destroyed. Also, I recommended you imprint Seshiro, not only because of his impressive +2/+2 bonus, but also because you can sacrifice the token to play Patron of the Orochi

as an Instant by playing the paltry difference of 2. Should you need to sideboard, this is another good candidate should you think it necessary.

Before continuing on to the sideboard, I think it necessary to discuss its purpose. Quite simply, the sideboard is there to protect the deck should you be faced with a deck that exploits the deck's weakness. What are those weaknesses? Well, there are two major weaknesses: flying creatures, and artifacts. The deck has only a few ways to protect against flying creatures. The sideboard provides two more Matsu-Tribe Snipers, two Traproot Kami

Well, that just about covers this deck. Of course, I am eager to see what new snakes will come from the Saviors of Kamigawa set, which I will be reviewing in a future article. If you have any suggestions or ideas for this deck, or if you have your own snake deck you'd like to share, e-mail it to me and I'll try to incorporate what I can into a future article as I continue to develop this deck.

This was my first attempt at an article; I would appreciate any comments you may have.
