CardShark Content - Jon Erik Ariza (7/1/2005)

The Samurai are arguably my favorite addition from the Kamigawa Block. The samurai are brutal, efficient, have a host of useful abilities, and work well in groups. With these points in mind, I built my Samurai deck to take advantage of as many of the Samurai’s abilities as I possibly could. The deck is dual-colored, red and white, as the two have the majority of the Samurai. Black, of course, has a few, but it hasn't been until Saviors of Kamigawa that black has received any decent Samurai, so they remain unrepresented in this deck.

The total card count comes to 65, once again slightly over the tradition 60-card deck, but it seems to work well enough without a noticeable effect on your draw phase.

Land:
Although it’s a dual-color deck, the land ratios are skewed almost two-to-one in favor of white, simply because most of the creatures are white. Also, with the two Kentaro, The Smiling Cat, you can use any color mana to pay for your samurai. There seems to be enough land to play the deck without any real problems, odds are you'll have the mana you need to play what you have, if not, you'll get it soon.

and all you get is a marginal boost in attack and defense. Also, there is only one of these fliers in the deck, at one point I had one Araba and one Mothrider, but dropped the latter in favor of adding more ground power. Unfortunately, this contributes to the vulnerability to fliers most of my decks suffer. Still, the hope is that you keep enough pressure on the ground to prevent the fliers from becoming too problematic.

Battle-Mad Ronin (2) Cost: 1R

These guys received a decent amount of use after their debut in Champions. A cheap 1/1 with an impressive Bushido 2. This creature is good early in the game as few people want to block a 3/3 with their one or two-drop, so there's an opportunity for a few good pings of damage while you and your opponent build up.

- Kenzo the Hardhearted (3) Cost: W

Perhaps my favorite one drop in the entire game, even beating out Isamaru by a good bit. An innocent-looking 1/1 at first, when it flips, it turns into a 3/4 Double-Striking, Bushido 2 Samurai, and one of the most feared creatures in recent memory and a game-ender on many occasions. The deck has several ways for Bushi to meet the flip conditions, like Indomitable Will

, Sensei Golden-Tail to make him a Samurai with Bushido, or Oathkeeper to give him a vicious stat boost. If you want him flipped, you'll not want to equip him with the sword of Kaldra as it will remove the defending creature from the game, never sending it to the graveyard, hence never meeting the flip conditions. Many people are also wary when you attack with a Bushi and will rather take the 1 damage than risk you pulling some tricks and flipping him.

The first legendary Samurai, not counting Kenzo The Hardhearted. Fumiko needs to be played strategically. Its Bushido value is dependant on the number of attacking creatures, when either on offense or defense. However, it forces your all your opponent's creatures to attack every turn, which works for her ability, but if you're at a severe creature disadvantage, there's a chance you'll be taking a good amount of damage, regardless of how high Fumiko's Bushido gets.

Godo is one of the more expensive creatures in the deck, but both his abilities are enormously useful. Upon playing him, you get to search for an equipment card and put it in play. There are only two different equipments in the deck and they're both Legendary, so if you already have a copy of both in play you're better off not using this ability, unless of course, you have the Mirror Gallery

in play. Second, when he attacks for the first time during a turn, it untaps all your Samurai and gives you an additional combat phase. Considering most of the creatures are Samurai, it basically untaps all your creatures. The fact that he isn't a Samurai is only a minor drawback as Sensei Golden-Tail can train him into a formidable Samurai for a minimal cost.

Not only does he have a formidable Bushido 2, but for a very minimum cost can regenerate any Samurai, including himself, and those trained by Sensei Golden-Tail. Add onto that the fact that he can't be countered and you have one tough warrior.

Kentaro, The Smiling Cat (2) Cost: 1W

One of the cheaper Legendary Samurai, Kentaro may not be physically powerful, but his presence relieves the problem many multi-colored decks face, that of not having/having enough of the right colored mana to play a particular creature, so he's a creature you'll want on the field.

is one of those odd creatures that can be played any time you could play an instant, making it a not-so-nice surprise for your opponent. Masako solves the problem with aggressive decks have, that in constantly sending most or all of your creatures to attack, you're left defenseless against your opponent's attack. As long as Masako is in play, all your creatures, in this case, Samurai with their deadly Bushido ability, can block as if they were untapped, which changes the way your opponent must consider his attack/block tactics.

Nagao, Bound By Honor (2) Cost: 3W

As far as I know, he's the only non-rare Legendary Samurai (not including Kenzo). The Captain of Takeno's Army, Nagao is a great inspiration to his troops and it’s reflected in the +1/+1 stat boost all Samurai you control receive when he attacks. Unlike Takeno's ability, Nagao himself benefits from the ability, making him, for attacking purposes, a 4/4 without considering the boost if his Bushido 1 is triggered.

Aside from wiping your opponent's side of any weenies he or she has in play before he or she has the opportunity to block (the 1 damage is dealt as soon as he's declared as an attacker), equip the Cliffrider with the Sword of Kaldra

Although the Blademaster's First-Strike ability may allow it to defeat the Houndmaster, this will most likely not be the case when you're playing against your opponent.

Sensei Golden-Tail (2) Cost: 1W

Another inexpensive, Legendary Samurai, Golden-Tail may not be the best creature for attacking, but his ability is invaluable. For only 1W, Golden-Tail will train any creature you control in the way of the Samurai, adding Samurai to their creature types and granting them an instance of Bushido 1. The best part is that multiple instances of Bushido trigger separately, basically they're cumulative. This means that you can use Golden-Tail to increase the Bushido rating for existing Samurai. It is Golden-Tail that can turn Godo or Masako into Samurai, so they can reap the benefits of cards like Call To Glory

The General of Konda's army whose powerful presence inspires all Samurai you control. Just placing him on the field gives each Samurai you control a +1/+1 boost for each point of Bushido it has. This means that your Battle-Mad Ronin is no longer a weenie 1/1 with Bushido 2, but a fearsome 3/3 with Bushido 2. The effect is even more dramatic on Konda, who goes from 3/3 to 8/8. The stat boost is interesting in the way it interacts with Fumiko. Since her Bushido rating is dependant on the number of attacking creatures, she can only reap the benefits during the combat phase when her ability is triggered.

is a nice card to have in play. It keeps all the legends from pooling in your hand and the obvious advantage of having multiple Takenos or Oathkeepers in play should be obvious. Of course, I'm also wary about this card, considering the number of artifact destroyers out there, once this leaves play, you instantly lose all mirrored legends under your control. While this card may be a boon to your board position, you should also be careful not to inundate your play field with doubles as to avoid a crushing blow should it be destroyed.

, is one of those Samurai-specific cards that are good on their own, but great when used with Samurai. A relatively cheap equipment that gives the equipped creature a +3/+1 stat boost is good enough, but the fact that it brings any equipped Samurai that dies back into play makes it a must-have in a Samurai-based deck. Untap all creatures that attacked this turn. You get an additional combat phase followed by an additional main phase this turn.

This is just a fun card and I hope to make a deck built around multiple combat phases per turn. After including Godo in this deck, I just couldn't resist including this one. The card itself is quite simple, any creature that attacked this turn gets to untap and attack again, also granting you a third main phase. The only problem, however, is that any damage your creatures took during the first combat phase is carried over to the next. If you have a creature advantage, odds are your opponent won't e able to block all your creatures during the first attack phase, meaning you'll have some creatures still fresh for the second attack. You may consider holding back the creatures that have taken near-critical damage the first combat phase and attack only with the fresh troops the second.

I doubt there are many of you still unfamiliar with the Divining Top, it’s even made Alongi’s list of top overplayed cards and it’s easy to see why. It quite simply gets you what you need a little faster than you'd get it otherwise. The usual tactic, of course, is to ´´look´´ at the end of your opponent's turn so that you can draw the card you need on your turn. Of course, if you see two cards you like, you can draw one then use the top's second ability to exchange it with the card on top of your library.

gives enough of a stat boost to turn a weenie into a monster, then add the fact that it removes any creature it deals damage to any creature, not just combat, it is removed from the game instantly, meaning the equipped creature can handle most any creature your opponent throws your way, and if the equipped creature has first strike, it can remove even a charging Colossus before it can lay a finger on you. The deck itself is very straight forward. You play your Samurai and attack and you keep on attacking. Many people prefer to take the damage from an oncoming Samurai than block it and trigger its Bushido ability. Of course, when you have an army of Samurai, they'll have no choice. The deck itself is optimized as much as possible for constant attacking, aside from all the Samurai's Bushido ability, Nagao gives all your Samurai a +1/+1 boost when attacking, Takeno gives your Samurai a stat boost equal to their Bushido ability, making all your creatures especially suited for attacking. Considering your constant attacking, odds are your creatures will be tapped during your opponent's turn a good deal of the time. To help compensate, you have Masako, which lets your tapped creatures block and Call to Glory

and he's rather puny. There are no burn spells to shoot them down and nothing else to keep them from flying over you. The best you can hope for when facing a big air assault is that your ground threat is enough for them to keep their fliers back for blocking purposes.
