CardShark Content - Jonathan Veazey (9/22/2006)

After the first week of my Coldsnap league I have an unspectacular 3-2 record. Not spectacular, but at least I won more matches than I lost (just barely). Hopefully this week will go a little better. Here’s the week one deck:

I like Jester’s Scepter, in a small set like this there are going to be a lot of duplicate cards popping up in people’s card pools. However, there’s no guarantee that you’ll hit anything useful when you cast it. Even if you do get something good, the Scepter can become something of a trap, as you might be inclined to hold back the two mana to activate it (or even to bluff activating it) rather than casting something. Like I said, I do like the card (possibly more than I should), but I think I’ll resist playing it this time around.

My results last week have me wanting to rethink my build. As I said last week, I don’t think I paid enough attention to green when making my week one deck. Two Into the North

So, was choosing blue over red the right choice? I’m not really confident that it was. Let’s see how the week worked out.

Game one of the first match started out well enough. My opponent and I were trading blows, but by turn eight he was down to ten while I was still at fifteen. Then came Aurochs Herd

. I had no answer for these guys, so my opponent took the win. I won game two rather quickly thanks to my opponent’s mana flood. Finally in game three my air superiority in the form of the Adarkar Windform

s, both of which I was able to recover once.

Record so far: 4-2

The first game of match two was again decided by my fliers (or rather, my opponent’s inability to deal with them). Unfortunately, just as I was starting to feel better about my blue choice, I lost games two and three to my opponent’s aggressive ground forces. He was able to drop creatures early and often and I just wasn’t able to field enough blockers to stay alive.

. We were both getting low on life as we reached the point where my opponent was going to have to lose his Hulk in two turns, but in the face of his attack for eight on his next turn I held the Herald back and blocked and killed the Yeti with it. I got one more attack after that with the Herald, taking my opponent to three, before I ran out of lands to take and he went away. What I realized after the fact was that had I got that additional attack in with the Herald I could have chump blocked the Yeti and I would have won. Instead I ended up losing to my opponent who, once he got his land back had more than enough to cast the creatures in his hand and swarm me for the win. The lesson here, of course, is that you should always be thinking ahead when you make your plays.

, fortunately it was my Hulk doing the testifying both games. The games themselves were pretty straightforward, but something happened at the end of game two that I want to recount. I was two turns away from winning the second game when my opponent opened up a chat with me:

1:32 [unnamed opponent]: could you on the goodness of your heart concede me the game??

An understandable request, I suppose. My opponent was undefeated up to this point, and as my mother always used to say, “It never hurts to ask.” However, I was still playing my counting games and with my record to that point I needed all the wins I could get, so I responded:

1:32 jgv6442: sorry…counting game for me
1:32 [unnamed opponent]: yeah but you have a really bad stand

Ouch. I suppose it is true that my record to this point isn’t very good, but still, where’s the tact? However, even though he was a little insensitive in his approach I still don’t find this particularly objectionable, he’s just trying to persuade me into doing him a favor.

1:32 [unnamed opponent]: I always take care from my friends

I actually didn’t notice this line at the time; too busy playing the game I guess. Is this some kind of implied bribe? Had I seen it I probably would have gotten annoyed with the guy a lot sooner. Instead I just responded to his previous statement:

1:32 jgv6442: only week two…every win counts

Had he left it here everything would have been cool and this whole thing probably wouldn’t have been worth mentioning, but he continued:

1:33 [unnamed opponent]: you actually can reach as much to 64
1:33 [unnamed opponent]: at 4 week

I actually wasn’t sure what he was trying to say here, so I just ignored him and went back to the game. He wasn’t through, though:

1:34 [unnamed opponent]: pleasse

This just before the decisive combat phase. At least he knows the magic word, I suppose. I’d already given my answer and didn’t feel the need to invite a guilt trip, so I ignored the chat and declared my attackers.

1:37 [unnamed opponent]: you are a bad person
1:37 [unnamed opponent]: I hope you get the same situation

At which point he just sat there and did nothing until he timed out. Again, I have no problem with someone asking for a concession. Had I been playing for tiebreakers I might have even given it to him, but once I said no that should have been the end of it. You can’t win every game, so there’s no need to be a jerk about it when you inevitably lose one. It’s people that act like this that drive people from the game.

Can you tell that I was annoyed? Anyway…[Editor’s note: Ha! I wouldn’t have given it to him either. Screw that guy. Good job standing up for yourself, Jon.]

Record so far: 5-4

Match five was less eventful and my opponent was a much better sport. Game one I was able to get a Herald into play and after it was in play for a couple of turns I had taken all of my opponent’s Snow Lands. This might not have been such a big deal, but he had two Ronom Serpent

, a particular problem for this opponent as most of his creatures were Snow Creatures.

Record at the end of Week 2: 6-4

Okay, still not a spectacular record. I think that once again at least some of my failures can be attributed to incorrect deck building decisions. Definitely something to consider for next week. Hopefully next week won’t give me another opportunity to complain about player behavior.
