What I've Learned in My Short Time as a Magic Player - Josef D. Pedretti (10/28/2012)

I am still a relatively new Magic player, I have really only been playing since I graduated high School in May, so about 6 months or so. In this time I have come to love everything that Magic has to offer. When I first started to play I understood the basics of the game from playing Duels of the Planeswalkers 2012. As a new player I thought you could just buy a starter deck and go to my local card shop and start playing. As I realized, yes you can do that, but you will most likely lose all of your games. The most effective way that I found to truly get into Magic was to find someone that you know that plays Magic, whether it be casual or competitive. This person will help you learn the game, help you better understand it and will be the one that teaches you how to have fun even when you lose. When I found this person for me, I found out another local card shop that plays much more casual every Friday and he invited me to play. When I went to my first FNM there, he introduced me to the casual players. By the end of the night it was one of the most fun nights of my life.

I met an entire new group of friends after one FNM and I learned more than I ever could have just sitting at home playing Duels of the Planeswalkers. The thing I learned most from all the new people I met was how to build a better deck and what I would enjoy playing more. After I went home I started to build the main deck I wanted to play, what I came up with was UR Delver. I have changed it a little bit since then, here is the current deck list I run, it is very casual and “budget” build.

in hand or they can help Delver burn their life more quickly.

A good game with this deck would be, Turn 1: Delver, Turn 2: Flip Delver and Swing, while placing another Creature or stopping their threat, Turn 3-Game: Keep swinging with Delver while stopping their threats with either the control or burn.

This was my only deck I had up until about two months ago. This is when a lot of the people in my Card Shop started to play EDH before and after FNM. So I didn’t want to be the only one left out so I started to work on an EDH deck. This is when most of the Return to Ravnica spoilers were out. I quickly noticed Jarad, Golgari Lich Lord

another creature: Each opponent loses life equal to the sacrificed creature’s power. The most efficient way to use his ability that I have found is to build my deck with a good mix of Ramp, creatures that can get really big, and spells that help creatures get really big. Then sac the creature to deal a massive amount of damage to all my opponents, either to win or to get close enough to winning that making everyone turn against me before I get another big creature to sac isn't game over. I have also found that I need tutors to help get out my big creatures before someone uses a combo to win before I get a chance to sac my creature.

And that brings me to today. After about 6 months of playing, the most important things that I have learned, I learned on the night of the RtR Pre-Release after I went 1-5. If you play casually, it doesn’t matter if you win or lose, it’s about having a good time with friends.
