Macro-Malefic Monarchs Exposed! - Joshua Northcutt (1/15/2012)

For my first article on CardShark, I would like to cover the intricacies of one of my favorite decks, Macro/Malefic Monarchs. This is a deck that I have spent the better part of the last 6-7 years developing, and as such it holds a specially place among my deck lists. To start, let’s take a quick look at the decklist

Now, the main strategy of this deck is to exploit the removal effects of Macro Cosmos and Dimensional Fissure, along with the return effects of D.D. Scout Plane and D.D. Survivor, in order to provide a consistent stream of tribute fodder for the monarchs, as well as a persistent attack barrier. The few tuner monsters I have included also have effects that help in providing tribute fodder, as well as giving access to synchro summons. I have also recently discovered that D.D. Scout Plane and Macro Cosmos combined provide and easy way to exceed summon rank 2 exceed monsters.

Here are a few ideal opening hands:

Opening hand 1 (going first) – Gold Sarcophagus, Battle Fader, Bottomless Trap Hole, Macro Cosmos, D.D. Scout Plain, Reckless Greed. Essentially, you would set Macro Cosmos, Bottomless Trap Hole, Reckless Greed, and D.D. Scout Plane. Then activate Gold Sarcophagus, selecting D.D. Scout Plane. This will give you an extra monster on you field during the end of your turn. On your opponent’s turn, if they summon a monster with 1500 or more attack points, activate Bottomless Trap Hole. If your opponent plays Heavy Storm, you will want to activate Reckless Greed. The Battle Fader in hand will help protect your life points should your opponent manage to swarm the field with enough monsters to be able to attack you directly.

Opening hand 2 (going second) – Gold Sarcophagus, Gold Sarcophagus, Macro Cosmos, Mobius The Frost Monarch, Fiend’s Sanctuary, Reinforcement Of The Army. With this opening hand, you end up with several options. To start, you would want to create some tribute fodder for Mobius. You can do this either by playing Fiend’s Sanctuary or Reinforcement Of The Army. With Fiend’s Sanctuary, you end up with a token monster that can be tributed. With ROTA, you search out Spell Striker, then remove ROTA to special summon Spell Striker. After Mobius has been summoned, set Macro Cosmos, then play both Gold Sarcos, selecting D.D. Scout Plane as the target for each (again giving you extra monsters during your end phase). If you used Fiend’s Sanctuary to generated the tribute fodder for Mobius, you can activate ROTA and get that Spell Striker out, giving you an opportunity to hit you opponent’s life points directly on the chance that during their first turn they set a monster.

In the case of example 2, once your turn comes again, you can then use the Scout Planes to exceed summon Gachi Gachi Gantetsu. As long as Macro Cosmos is still on the field, when you use Gachi Gachi’s effect, the Scout Planes will return to the field during the end phase of the turn.

Game 2 of the match is where the real fun begins. First, you want to side out the Scout Planes, Macro Cosmos, and D Fissures from the main deck, as well as Iron Chain Dragon, X-Saber Urbellum, and Colossal Fighter from the extra deck. Then, side in the Malefic cards, Cyber End Dragons, and Skill Drain. The ideal hand in this case would be to have Malefic World, at least one Malefic monster, and Skill Drain in hand. The strategy here is to use the effects of Malefic World and Skill Drain to swarm the field with all 3 Cyber End Dragons. The secondary strategy is to use the Malefic monsters as tribute fodder for the monarchs.

This is, of course, just one of many, many decklists I have made over the years. My next article will be covering a special Hamon Burn deck I have been working on recently that I think you all may enjoy. Until then, play fair and always have fun.
