Disclaimer: I’m discussing cards that haven’t been released yet. If you are a player who likes to be surprised when a new set comes out, you might not want to read on.

Well, here we are, on the brink of a new set. Betrayers of Kamigawa will have a prerelease event on the weekend of the 22nd – 23rd of January. With the cards I’ve seen on various “spoiler” sites, I LOVE what’s coming. With the “remove from game cards” (Quash

’s Destiny, the 1/1 spirits for one with great sacrifice abilities, and the new alternate casting cost counterspell. With all these new cards arising I see a HUGE change in the standard format.

Affinity
Sadly, at least for me and other affinity loathers, I see affinity taking the smallest hit. Granted splinter will remove all the Vials, Enforcers, and other artifacts it can target without an Atog

can run a turn faster than it already does, which would be insane, it better find another way to ramp up to that 9 mana for the entwined spell of doom.

Mono Black Control
So, as I was looking over the spoiler I see this neat spirit creature. Reading along the lines of “when a creature becomes the target of a spell or ability for the first time this turn, counter that spell or ability.” Horobi…eat your heart out. This creature alone makes anyone who is playing creature control double up on the hate even to kill a 1/1. Just by the card trade ratio spending 2 of your cards in hand, or using a card and an ability, or two abilities, to get rid of one. I think I like those figures. Two Oxidize

, that’s rough. Although this creature makes it insanely hard to kill creatures, there is another card I saw that looked very promising for this deck. Think Yawgmoth’s Will, but in constant creature form. Whenever a creature is put into a graveyard from play you may play target instant from your graveyard as if it was in your hand, remove it from the gave afterwards. Sounds like a fair deal.

. Yea, like who in their right mind plays that one out of all the other ones. Well, I have been a reader of InQuest for many years, and I recall reading an article talking about the top 100 magic combos of all time. Somewhere in the list there was Eradicate

and any spell that animates land. So it breaks down to this. Land is a 3/3 creature, Eradicate

removes from the game target non-black creature and then searches the controllers hand, graveyard and library for all creatures with the same name and removes them as well. It’s kind of hard to play magic without land.

Man-Lands
For those unfamiliar to what I mean by saying man-lands I’m reoffering to lands that can become creatures once a specific requirement is met. Examples of these include Stalking Stones

, etc… Betrayers has a land enchantment of each color to enchant its respective land. Once the enchantment is on the land a mana cost can be paid to “animate” the land. Yea, the land could die in combat, but each of the enchantments has the ability that says when the enchanted land is put into the graveyard from play return the enchantment to its owner’s hand. So, this could be a great way to gain attackers or blockers, or it could even be a great way to play land destruction in mirror match.

Granted the type 2 (standard) players will have to try and test these ideas, along with others to see if these combos and ideas are Fact or Fiction
