Trying to Steal Game Day with a Last Minute Craterhoof - Kendall Halman (11/8/2012)

Last week, I wrote you an article about a Blue/Red Delver deck. This week, I played it at Friday Night Magic. I did change the list a bit to accommodate my card availability and based on some additional testing on Magic Online throughout the week.

The biggest change was my choice to remove Ash Zealot

. Unfortunately, this essentially meant paying three mana and three cards for a 3/4 vanilla creature. The extra toughness is very nice, but the package just does not seem to work in this deck. I plan on working on a RUG deck that takes advantage of cards like Quirion Dryad

to get more value out of the cards I eat with the Elemental, but that's not what I want to talk about this week.

At FNM, I went 1-2 and then dropped, because it looked like I would be out of contention for major prizes. Even if I won the next two rounds, something I was not confident that I would be able to pull off, I might win a pack. Also, I needed to build a functional deck that night, because the next day was Game Day.

My original plan for this past weekend was to play the Delver deck on Friday and Saturday and then run my new budget infect deck in the Modern GPT on Sunday. Unfortunately, it was clear that my Delver deck was just not good enough to win anything. I needed to think of something new. I could run Jund

The turnout for Game Day was less than one might have been expected. We only had nine players. After grabbing a cup of coffee with Tim, the unofficial event coordinator, I sat down against my first opponent.

Round 1 Versus Larry's Mono Red

I see Larry regularly around the shop, but have never really talked to him. He is a nice guy, and his deck was a decent stock mono red list. However, according to him, he really does not play Standard that often.

If you've ever read my articles, I've likely mentioned Bobby. He is the store's ringer. Although, there are definitely a handful of us who are improving our play skill and deck building enough to take him down from time to time. Oddly enough, he lost his first round, but I was paired down against him.

Bobby also built his deck Friday night after FNM, so I had no idea what he was playing. Game one was long and painful. He clearly had control of the board, but I also had access to Craterhoof Behemoth

and a couple other cards that I normally save for aggressive decks. I don't know if he sideboarded or if the deck just ran slower, but it felt much more like a control deck than it had in the first game. He was able to develop a board faster than I could remove his creatures, and I could not draw a game ending threat, so he won that game.

Game three went much the same as game one. I developed a board and won with Craterhoof Behemoth

Finally, it was Sunday morning, I had my Modern infect deck, and I was ready to win some byes for a Grand Prix that I probably would not be able to attend. I'll definitely have to write an article about the deck sometime. Unfortunately, I will need the opportunity to play it first. You see, we did not have enough people to fire off the tournament.
