CardShark Content - Kevin Knack (5/2/2002)

I’ve always been a big fan of green/white decks. They have board control, big creatures, tempo…basically everything but counters and hand manipulation/destruction. When Judgment is released, G/W will make its tournament presence known, but for the time being it’s been sitting on the wayside. In order to get back into the swing of playing G/W, I’m offering up the following deck. It’s in its 3rd incarnation and in the exact state I’m playing it. There are still a few cards I’d like to get for it and some modifications I’m thinking about, but I’ll get to that at the end of the article.

“G/W Durability”

This deck has proven extremely effective against any aggressive deck, including Frog, Mono-Black, and Sligh. It isn’t uncommon for the deck to get slapped around the first 4 or so turns before the board stabilizes and you grind ahead for the win. Unfortunately, control tends to give this deck problems, particularly Tog decks. The Squirrel Nest

The deck itself is fairly simple to play. You’re basically buying time until a troll or angel hits the board. Once they do, they usually deal enough damage to wrap the game up for you. Sideboarding is very important with this deck. It’s not uncommon to lose the first game and win the next two because during the first game you’ll often draw a red or black hate card against a deck that isn’t playing red or black. Just switch them about as needed, replacing them with Chaplains and Kavus if your opponent is playing neither red nor black.

The deck still needs some improvements to make top 8 consistently. I’m wavering between keeping the acolytes main-decked or subbing them out for some Thornscape Apprentice

for the 4 drop, but this deck just doesn’t hit threshold that quickly and the trolls are doing a fine job. I think the mana curve could be smoothed out a bit too. Swapping the mongrels for some Calls might help it. It’s still very competitive in this form though…I have yet to have a losing record with it at a tourney. It’s only lost against aggressive decks when I’ve gotten a set of bad draws (like land…land…land) and my opponent top-decked the right cards. Control it struggles with though.
