CardShark Content - Kevin Knack (5/7/2002)

There are many styles of deck building. The easiest (assuming you can afford it) is to simply copy one of the net decks that are currently in vogue. Another popular method is to throw together all the best cards of a set and hope their efficiency carries you through. Before you can master the game, however, you must understand the deck building concepts of combo and synergy.

The concepts of combo and synergy, though related, are not the same thing. Synergy carries with it an essence of subtlety. Mastering it is like snatching a pebble from the master’s hand. Incorporating synergy means making sure the cards you have in your deck work well and enhance each other. Combo, on the other hand, is quite spectacular when it goes off. Combo is busting out on your opponent Shaolin style and putting your hand through their chest. Combos are typically game-winning combinations of cards that kill off your opponent in a single turn.

Every deck you have should contain synergy. You should try to put cards into your decks that work well together (or at the very least, don’t sabotage each other). Synergistic cards tend to work perfectly well on their own, but really show their strengths when combined with another card. I know that just saying ‘work well together’ is a rather broad statement, so here is a list of examples to clarify.

brings back a creature enchantment from the grave to your hand when it comes into play. Embrace the Monk and you’ll have a recurring problem for your opponent.

Obviously, there are hundreds, if not thousands, more card combinations like this. The real trick is to look across a couple of different sets and figure out how cards interact with each other.

Combos are much more difficult to devise and pull off. They often involve some obscure timing rules and a lot of patience. Rather than embarrass myself trying to devise a new half-assed combo, I’m simply going to direct you to Chris Morling’s “A Brief History of Combo…”, also in this section. He does a very good job of breaking down the combo deck and providing some deck lists for the brave of heart. Let me say this on Combo decks. They usually aren’t too fun to build, play, or play against. I think everybody should try and build one just to get the whole magic experience, but I’ll just stick with synergy for now and keep my friends.

Here’s a fun deck that has quite a bit of synergy. It’s served me very well for multi-player games and holds its own dueling. Note that I do think of this as a fun deck and there are a lot of cards (like Abomination
