CardShark Content - Kevin Knack (10/30/2002)

Technically speaking, this should be part 2 of my earlier article, “Thoughts on the Detroit Pre-release”. Unfortunately, between a heater core cracking in my car, midterms, interviewing for a ‘real’ job, and a plethora of other engagements, it turns out that I’m some two or three weeks late with this follow up. That’s ok though, I imagine that most of you are sick of reading short blurbs on every card in the set. Instead I’ll try to focus a little bit more on the draft and sealed games I’ve been playing have been turning out (focusing mainly on draft…there really isn’t too much you can do with sealed other than build the best deck possible with the cards you’ve gotten).

My last draft tournament went very well for me. It was 7-man and unsanctioned, but it was still a blast. I ended up drafting the following deck, going undefeated with it in 3 matches (6 games).

come my way. Since the black had been fairly strong (not spectacular…just solid) until that point I decided it would be a good secondary color to start picking up. I picked up some other utility cards in both red and black for the next several packs. For picks 10-15 my colors basically dried up, and there was nothing but Blue and White picks. I’d been shipping white to my left for quite some time, so I grabbed a lot of decent blue cards – a Mistform Dreamer

Who Drafted What? –

It turns out I picked the right colors to read in and read my signals pretty well.

From me, clockwise, the decks were:

- RB(Me), WR, GR, BU, GR, WB, GR, (Me)RB -

Now, looking at the players, you notice a couple of things. First, how did I get the red that I did? The player to both my left and right were also drafting red…what happened?

I figured the player to my left would be drafting red along with his white, the white was being shipped and red was the second strongest color I was passing him (Green had disappeared up to my point, the Blue was underdrafted but also weak, and I was taking most of the decent black). It isn’t so bad fighting over a color with the person to your left, as you’ll be passing to him for two packs. The person on my right surprised me a bit. It turned out he was kill-drafting on green, and only using red for a splash. I do think if he had been more familiar with Onslaught

s and several other good red cards, especially when I realized how badly I was hurting on creatures.

Other than that, the cards I got aren’t too surprising. I should have been getting the black I was, with only two other black players at the table and them sitting 2 and 4 spots down from me. I suspect that several players dipped their hands into blue, but nobody wanted to commit too deeply, and that’s why there was only one blue player at the table.

The Games –

Game 1: Red/GREEN Beats

Game 3: White/Red Soldier

My final opponent was by far the most skilled at the table, and the individual that had been sitting on my left. I knew it would be my toughest match, but at least I knew basically what he was playing – a soldier deck with a LOT of Gus

seems to be all about the mid-game. You want as many useful 3 drops as you can get. Hopefully those 3 drops batter over your opponents weenies and deal the death blow before anything too big to handle comes out.

if you wait until you have 6 mana to cast things. It’s a loooong wait for lands number 6 and 7…there are probably better things to be doing. I even have my doubts about Dragon’s Roost. The only time I would have had the chance to play it was the final turn I was about to kill my opponent in. I guess in the end, a 6cc spell is still a 6cc spell. If I’m gonna play with it, it had better end the game.

I’m starting to have my doubts for green as a draft color. The GG many spells require is just a little too brutal. Add in a bunch of mediocre tricks and creatures that require a second mortgage before you can bring them out, and you have what seems to be a weak color. Don’t misunderstand me, green is still a powerhouse in sealed. I just don’t think that you can be flexible enough with it in draft. It needs a support color, but like the autistic kid with ADHD, it doesn’t really play well with others. Red, on the other hand, is simply amazing. It’ll probably be overdrafted, but you’ll still get some reasonable cards if you force it. Red with some combination of White, Blue, or Black seems to be the way to go. Right now I’m really starting to favor Red/Black…the removal is absolutely nuts.
