Magic Slang – everything that you really need to know about slang in Magic: the Gathering (Part 1 of 2)

If you had read articles or engaged in conservation with other players, you may have noticed that there is a certain kind of language involved with Magic. If you are new to the game, or just coming back from a long layoff, you may not be familiar with the terms. Part I will give just the general slang terms used, not slang that is referred to different deck types.

Drop: To withdraw from an event, to play a creature. (I just did a 3-3 drop in that PTQ.)

Busted: To get disqualified from an event, to get caught doing something illegal. (I got busted from that event for cheating with a marked deck.)

Dairy Queened: Getting disqualified. (I didn’t get Dairy Queened because of that random.)

Shady: Cheating in some form, usually in the form of deck manipulation or tournament fraud. (Watch that random scrub: he’s been engaging in some shady play recently.)

Perms: Getting banished or suspended, usually on IRC but the DCI may hand a few of these out from time to time. (The DCI handed out four perms on Tuesday for various offenses.)

Vacation: Getting suspended from the DCI for a short time period, usually 1 year or less. (The DCI handed out a 6-month vacation to that savage cheater for bribery.)

Beats: Using creatures to attack opponent for major damage. (That player is putting on some serious beats in that game.)

The list of slang terms should give new players a good start into getting familiar with the game, especially the tourney reports that tend to run a lot of the slang.

Kim Harvey

PS: Special props to DeQuan Watson for supplying some of the slang, mainly from an article he had on The Pojo a few weeks ago. The term “Educational Draft” came from Chris Page from an IRC chat several months back. Some of the other slang has come from sites like Sideboard.com and other sites on the Internet. “Dairy Queened” came from Nicholas Knight on teamregime.com several months ago.

Slang referring to individual magic cards and decks will come in Part 2 of the Slang in Magic Article that should be coming very soon.
