CardShark Content - Kim Harvey (5/13/2002)

Friday morning, I picked up Justin “Quiksand” Pearson and headed north in my vehicle towards Milwaukee. My parents weren’t thrilled with me for taking this trip, but I was going because I needed to get away from St. Louis and from them. The trip up was very uneventful. When we got to the hotel, I checked in and we put the Grand Prix Trial decks together. Justin went with R/G, I turned to Edge.dec (goblin trenches variant).

Edge.dec, version 3.4 (which may not be the exact version I really used)

Round 3 –TJ Lake – mirror matchup

The last thing I came to Milwaukee was to get paired against someone from the Kansas City area. TJ is actually from St. Joesph, which isn’t very far from Kansas City. He was running pretty much the same deck, except for Lighting Angels. He admitted that he hadn’t playtested against the mirror at all.

I decided that sleep was more important than trying to play to 3 AM, so I dropped and went to bed. Justin went 6-2 with his deck, and the Swiss rounds didn’t get done until 3:30 AM. I woke up around 4:30 AM and noticed him wide awake and looking through his binder. I told him that wakeup was in 3 hours and I had barely gotten any sleep.

That morning, I decided to make a deck change. After noticing tons of U/G decks at the trial, I went for U/G Opposition

652 players signed up, making it the biggest Grand Prix in North American history. I wasn’t very surprised at that fact, though, considering it was one of the first Standard Grand Prix in a very long time (as a matter of fact, the last time that happened, I was still attending high school). Milwaukee is just 90 minutes from Chicago, and within 8 hours drive of St. Louis, Detroit, Indianapolis, and Minneapolis. Not surprisingly, there were quite a few from those cities.

Besides myself and Justin, six other St. Louisians made the trip north. John Eardley was already there when we showed up to check in the hotel on Friday afternoon (with another player), and Mike Donovan, Aaron Hauptmann, and Matt Schmaltz showed up around midnight.

There would be 8 rounds of Swiss before a cut to the Top 64.

I dropped with a 3-3 record. I was so tired that I almost dropped “dead” in the hallway in front of Chris Page and two other people. I tried going to bed early but couldn’t fall asleep. So after about a half-hour of lying down I grabbed one Dr. Pepper, Mountain

Dews – the Hit N Run convenience stores that are located near where I live, and they have drive-thru service. Well, the major problem is that St. Louis is a major Dr. Pepper drinking town, and that vending machine is constantly sold out of Dr. Pepper – especially during major events. Not much has really happened in #mtgwacky and its probably me not being in there in the past two weeks as I had a lot going on. I did tell him about this certain person that got banished from wackyland and some of the comments he messaged to me (which had some very choice words in it).

Meanwhile, Justin’s luck ran out and lost the last three matches. Mike Donovan made it to 5-1, but took two unintentional draws in the final 2 rounds to be knocked out of competition. None of the St. Louisians made day 2, despite the fact all of us finished middle of the pack or better. Daniel Bates missed out on tiebreakers, but Jarod Burt (who has played during PTQ’s in St. Louis in the past) squeaked in.

Sunday morning, Justin and I went back to St. Louis a full day earlier than planned. First thing that he noticed was that the windshield wiper blades was worn out. With rain predicted for St. Louis, I knew that we had to stop somewhere to get new blades. We got them at the NAPA store in the Bloomington-Normal area. To tell the truth, it was the best $25 investment I made the entire weekend. We got caught in the tail end of a massive thunderstorm complex that went through Springfield. We decided to stop to get some food and I then found out that two tractor-trailers apparently jackknifed on the southbound lanes of 55 near Diveron and they were blocking the road. I made the decision to get onto 72 from Wabash and take it down to US 67 to go through Alton. Well, that part of the trip was uneventful until we got to Brighton and it rained real hard. It rained so hard that I could barely see. Fortunately, I know this area very well, and used a shortcut when I realized that US 67 was impassible near the McDonald’s. les County. The downpours continued until I got less than a mile north of 270. 30 minutes later, I dropped Justin off and went back home. Sure enough, most of the streets where I live were flooded out. I later learn that 5 inches of rain fell in 30 minutes and more was coming. I got home about 2 hours later than first planned, but at least we were safe. I knew that the rest of the St. Louis contingent was coming home that night, and I hope that they don’t end up in the same mess that we ended up into once south of Springfield.

Props

Daniel Bates: sorry that I didn’t get to play some MLB Showdown with you this weekend. We’re going have to save that for a PTQ that will be in St. Louis in July.

Justin Pearson: for riding with me and letting me borrow the cards that I needed that weekend. The biggie was that he warned me to get new windshield wiper blades for my car and that was crucial since the weather really sucked this weekend.

Mike Donovan: it really sucks that you had the two unintentional draws in the last two rounds of day 1 to knock you out of Day 2.

EDT: for winning the whole thing
MikeyP: for signing my playmat and being a nice guy

Chris Page: first of all, for pulling that all-nighter to judge the GPT after driving all day long, and for his efforts to keep myself from crashing in the hallway just outside of the room where the event was located.

The NAPA store in Bloomington-Normal for being open on Sundays and for having the wiper blades in stock.

Barrat Moy and Alan Hoachman: for organizing a fine, well-run event.

To Cardshark for being out in force in the event.

Slops

To Mother Nature for raining the entire weekend, and causing the mess on the way back home.

To my parents, because they really didn’t want me to make this trip. Well, I’m 23 years old and I just wanted to get the hell out of St. Louis and away from them for a weekend.

To the fact that the hotel room was located on one side of the hotel, and the event location was located on the other side. This meant long walks. Having long matches didn’t help matters out at all, and it’s very difficult to head back from the event room when you’re dead tired.

Well, this just sums up the entire report.
