CardShark Content - Kim Harvey (9/8/2002)

I watched GP Cleveland from my computer, and although the format is still the same, a few decks have evolved in the format. These decks probably made it through because other decks did not test for them, but they are for real and you must be ready for them. Here are four kinds of decks that made serious gains in Cleveland.

Deck 1: Red/White beats.

Nicolai Herzog originally brought out this deck at the 2002 World Championships, but the deck remained anonymous as Herzog did not have a great overall showing during the event. However, at GP Cleveland, St. Louis resident Matt Schmaltz brought the deck to the forefront:

15 sideboard cards

This deck is not the same thing that Herzog ran at the World Championships (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=sideboard/worlds02/d3decks2). Herzog ran fewer lands (in addition, his deck seemed to favor white instead of red), and his sideboard is totally different than Schmaltz. Another aspect that makes Schmaltz’s deck stand apart are the creatures. The only creatures they had in common were Glory

The net result was the records that the two decks did. Herzog did 0-3 with the R/W deck before dropping out of the World Championships. Schmaltz made day 2 with a 6-1-1 record and eventually finished 19th with a 10-3-1 record, without any byes. piloted different versions of wake, with Chapin going with four colors and Harvey with three. There was a big difference in that decision: Harvey finished in 10th at GP Cleveland (missing out of Top 8 on tiebreakers) and Chapin only managed a 113th place performance. Still, it does not mean the 3-color version is a superior version to the 4-color version.

Deck 3: Pirates

This deck made a debut during a GPT at Gen Con UK when Mark Wraith made Top 4 in the trial. Although it did poorly at GP London, it brought ideas to various pros.

Just one week ago, Dave Williams could do nothing but watch. It wasn’t until 3 days before GP Cleveland when Williams was reinstated. Williams took his own version of Pirates, which is a modified mono-black Braids deck with Zombie Infestation

. With a cheap casting cost, and a flashback cost that involves sacrificing a creature, this card can easily be cast twice in a turn. The first time is to see what is in the other player’s hand; the other is to remove any offensive cards. Sometime the player can guess correctly the first time, which makes the second time a bonus. Jensen finished 22nd at GP Cleveland, including 7-1 during Day 1 competition (Jensen also had three byes to work with). However, Jensen went 3-3 during Day 2 to knock him out of contention for Top 8. He lost to mono-black control, upheaval/infestation, and blue/green speculation during Day 2.

I hope that these four decks will give players some ideas when playtesting for the final 3 weeks of the OBC PTQ season. September 14 brings PTQ’s in Grand Rapids, MI; Tulsa, OK; Tallahassee, FL; Edison, NJ; Houston, TX (2 slots); Lubbock, TX; Richmond, VA; and Seattle. Take your pick if you plan on playing next weekend, because I’ll be spending that time in a lot of pain (I have to get a wisdom tooth taken out, and its going to be hurt city next weekend).
