CardShark Content - Kim Harvey (9/15/2002)

People have noticed that I have kind of disappeared from the Cardshark writing community recently. Well, I have been trying to mise a job since graduating from college in May, and focusing on MLB Showdown. My attempts to mise a job have been futile at best, and you can attribute that to the coward named Osama Bin Laden who decides to piss Americans off barely one month into my senior year of college. Corporate fraud allegations haven’t helped matters at all, and its difficult to even obtains a decent part-time job.

I haven’t spent this summer doing much about Magic. I’ve played in a casual game here and a game there, but Magic is a lesser priority right now. The only event I played this summer was a GPT in St. Char

s proved to be the biggest void the deck had.) Instead, I have devoted most of my playtesting time in MLB Showdown (excellent card game). I wished that CardShark would allow players to sell individual copies of MLB Showdown cards, because there isn’t a good place to obtain MLB Showdown singles anywhere in the world. Oh well, short rant aside, I’ve been trying hard to mise an invite to the MLB Showdown national championship.

Why? The 2002 National Championship is in Kansas City, which is just 4 hours from St. Louis. If the national championship was held in a far-away city, I probably wouldn’t give this game as much interest, because my budget is very tight right now. My first attempt was at Chicago at Pastimes on July 27, when I made a 5-½ trip with Scott Forster. The top 4 gets invites to nationals. I finished 7th, with a 4-2 record in a 32-player field. I would have made it into the top 4 if my bullpen hasn’t failed for Barry Zito twice during the event. It was frustrating getting knocked out of contention that way, but those things happen.

So last weekend, I went to Kansas City for the regional there. Going to the Kansas City regional meant having to miss the PTQ in St. Char

les that day, but I could care less. Most of my Kansas City magic buddies were going to Witcha for a PTQ there, so I wasn’t going to miss them at all. I went with a group of 9 others in three different vehicles down I-70 that day. This regional drew 21 players from 6 states including players as far away as Wisconsin and Iowa. I lost in the first round against Forster (oh well, it was payback for me beating him at Chicago), and proceeded to win the next 3 matches in a 5-round event. I got paired against the person that came all the way from Wisconsin (and this person was at the Chicago regionals as well), and it was a must-win match to make Top 4. I lost that match, and I really don’t want to talk publicly about it right now. I’ll do so at a later time, but now isn’t the best time. It will be the last event I’ll use spindown d20’s in any MLB Showdown event, however, because I found out that players can find ways to cheat with them. Spindown d20’s were designed for Magic: The Gathering life counters, not as a d20 that is needed in MLB Showdown. If you use d20s to determine random outcomes, I suggest Chessex d20’s. They’re the best quality dies on the market, and they feature random patterns. Just about any gaming store will sell these dies, so pay a visit as soon as possible.

Well, I finished in 6th place in that regional with a 3-2 record. St. Louis managed to place 2 players in the top 4 though, but both were knocked out in the semifinals. It was a long trip back home to Illinois, in part because I was just in a bad mood from what happened in Round 5, and what happened to one of my friends in the ensuing semifinal knockout round. I went home, crashed, and got up in time to visit with my parents.

Well, in the next month (actually the week before the prerelease), I’ll be moving back to my parent’s house, which is about an hour southeast of St. Louis. It really sucks because I have to move outside of the St. Louis area, but my folks decided not to renew the lease that is about to expire at the end of September. This will mean some good news for players looking to mise a few cards because I’ll put more up for sale (I want to move as few boxes of commons as possible), and I want to clean out my junk rares binder. I’m going have to fund my trip to the MLB Showdown nationals out of my own pocket (which isn’t going to be cheap, but I have to because my parents have way too many bills due in October to mention), and every little bit will help in the cause. My parents didn’t help me one bit when it came for GP Milwaukee, and I know they will not help me out for this one too.

The one bit of good news is that my parents are going to get rid of Earthlink

(they suck hands down) and switching to cable modem. Because of this, my email address probably will remain the same, but there may be delays in me shipping cards. I’ll probably be in “vacation” mode between Mid-September through early-October, so please plan out those orders.

Now its time to run my mouth about Magic

I’m sorry about going off-topic. Even Marcus thought I went way off-topic. Well, to be honest to everyone, Magic has taken a backseat more so than lately. In the next two weeks, I won’t have time for Magic because I’ll be using this time to pack boxes. It will be a big surprise for me if I make it to the Onslaught

is easier to figure out than this. I expect that this ability is going to be explained in detail in the prerelease FAQ (which hasn’t been released yet), or by RuneH in one of the major magic channels on Efnet. But Morphing will change how certain decks will be played in the new Standard format. Heck, it will be the ideas of various netdecks once the completed spoiler is learned. Toss in a few Clone

is revealed, so I will not reveal any potential strengths/weaknesses that the deck will have against other types. Those decks will be changing too, and it is too soon to make any judgments. Only time will tell. I will probably reveal the stuff at a later date, when I get an opportunity to do extensive playtesting online (although apprentice is not a firewall friendly software, I just cannot afford to spend the big bucks on MTGO to get the important cards at this present time).

My final rant is casual magic. I have heard about and playtested 5-Color and Peasant Magic. I don’t care much about 5-Color because the 250 card decks make it very difficult for me to shuffle one of those decks in a manner that is sufficiently randomized. I have tiny hands in the first place, and not being able to use sleeves pose another problem: I don’t shuffle well without them. Peasant Magic has been discussed extensively at CardShark. I really like this format, because players can’t load their old school decks with all those powerful rares. Nobody is going to spend most of the points on dual lands. Instead, those points will be spent on quality rares, and the rest on dependable bargains. With a few exceptions, one of my old extended White Weenie decks (which is all commons and uncommons except for 6 sideboard cards, and 2 maindecked Wrath of God

hs Games thought up another casual format called “Monster Mash”. The rules are at http://www.hannahsgames.com/magic/viewthread.php?tid=96, but to make things simple, you must have a deck that has at least 100 cards, with a minimum of 400 “Power + Toughness” points. I have played “100 Card Type 1”, which is popular in parts of Ontario. MTGOntario.com has reported events using this format. 100 Card Type 1 uses Type 1 Constructed rules, but the “Power Nine” (Mox Pearl
