CardShark Content - Kim Harvey (9/30/2002)

The six weeks before the prerelease weekend was nothing but hectic. It was probably the worst six weeks of my gaming career. It started when I got cheated out of an invitation to next weekend’s MLB Showdown Nationals back on August 24 (during Kansas City Regionals). I was playing a “win and you’re in, lose and you’re out” round during the final round of Swiss, when my opponent used a spindown d20 and abused it. I virtually walked out of the place mad, and brought the matter to the DCI. Less than two weeks later, I learned that Chris Zantides got let go, and my chances of winning an invitation via appeal was washed down the drain. After getting into various emails and IRC chats with other players and judges that I know, I made the decision to find all of my “spindown” d20 I still had, and threw them away. I replaced them with the Chessex d20, which use a 1-20, 2-19, etc. numbering pattern. If you still use those spindown d20s, I suggest you to replace them ASAP with the Chessex d20s, or switch to “pen and paper” method. That MLB Showdown event taught me why spindown d20s should never be used to determine a random outcome.

During the same time, my parents chose not to renew the lease of my apartment, and told me that I was going have to do without the cable modem for some time. My parents live in a $150,000 house in a county in Southern Illinois where the property tax for a house of that value is approximately $7,000, which is due in October. Because of it, not only I had to move back to my parent’s house; my dad told me that I have to skip the MLB Showdown National Championships. I was not happy at all. I’m turning 24 next month, and I thought that this was not tech at all. Last weekend was moving day, and since that day, I’m being forced to connect to a 56K line that is connecting at an average speed of 21.6 KBPS.

So, the prerelease weekend is coming up, and I haven’t touch anything related to Onslaught

in two weeks, except for the Prerelease FAQ that RuneH pasted on #mtgjudge (on irc.efnet.org), and the posts about the practice sealed decks on mtgontario.com. The slow internet connection hasn’t helped in the matters, as it either takes forever to download, or I get knocked offline (my ISP is awful). So fast-forward to September 27, where I get up at 6 PM and get on IRC, talking to Quiksand (Justin Pearson) and ACiDWuRM (William Brand

. They were talking about PT Boston. Both were tracking the team consisting of John Eardley, Matt Ham, and Mike Heffern the entire day. After that team eventually dropped out with a 2-3 record, the focus was looking at the photo gallery (there were two judges we knew that got sponsorship to that event). Around 8 PM, there was a picture posted, and I gave both of them the link . . . (More pictures were linked at http://www.hannahsgames.com/magic/viewthread.php?tid=132 later during the weekend, as I decided to stay home instead of going to a high school friend’s wedding.)

[19:48] heh
[19:48] i was hoping he was gonna skip the PT and judge the prerelease :(
[19:48] unless he's going for L3 ;)

Normally, Glenn is in St. Louis for prerelease weekends (well, ever since Invasion). All three of us knew that this weekend would be something different. Well, I snuck out of the house at 10:15 PM, make the nearly 2-hour trip to St. Char

les to the Fantasy Shop. Dr. Dan Drahos is judging the midnight flight. He is a big time set collector, and his goal is to get an entire set before 5 PM on the first day of the prerelease weekend. He is also known to joke around a bit, and one of his memorable prerelease quotes is “I’m Dr. Dan and I will be your flight attendant for this evening!” (That was during the Apocalypse

prerelease, if I wasn’t mistaking, but it could been the Odyssey one for all that matters.)

So after the announcements were made, the decks were passed out. Upon opening, the blue and white was next to unplayable. The only highlight in blue was two counterspells, and one spell that tap creatures. The only white card worth playing was Daru Lancer

Although 80+ players participated in the midnight flight, only 6 rounds were played. Barratt Moy announced that his last plan to get players to play in more sealed deck flights and fewer booster drafts backfired at the last prerelease (no surprise there). He announced that the more sealed deck flights you played, the cheaper it would be for you to draft and play sealed deck. St. Louis is a draft-happy town, and every prerelease, there seem to be only 3 or 4 sealed deck flights, and 40+ drafts. I don’t remember half of the stuff that my opponents played, so that is why the details are sketchy.

Please, not another deck playing black and/or green. =( I’m in a must-win situation, because the last draw was essentially a loss. A loss or another draw would put me out of contention of the prizes.

hits the table. I cannot find a Sliced Dice to get rid of it, and I extend my hand to him.

2-1-2.

I’m at 8 points. The best I could get is 11 points, which will not be enough to win packs. I drop out, get some breakfast, and sell a few cards to Coy Kissee (I pulled two foils I had no intention on using). I asked Coy where was Connie, and he told me that she broke her arm recently. I told him that “I was sorry to hear about it.” I told him that one of my cousins broke her foot earlier this summer in 12 places, and could do nothing but sit around the house, so don’t feel that bad. I also sell a few cards to Dan, and take a quick nap before heading home. Before I headed home, I heard comments (probably Dan) that essentially said, “there is a big difference when Glenn is here.”

Props

Quiksand for playing well in the same midnight flight. I don’t remember his final record of that flight, but he was 4-1 after 5 rounds.

Gregg Denton: for also pulling the all-nighter. All-night magic events are fun when they are spent with some of your buddies. ;)

Connie Kissee: I’m sorry to hear what happened to you recently. I hope you get better soon so you can be at the Legions prerelease.

To my parents for not getting on my case for sneaking out of the house at 10:20 PM Friday night and getting home at 11 AM Saturday morning.

Zack Davis for qualifying for MLB Showdown nationals on rating =D.

Team Cardshark for a strong showing at PT Boston. It sucked you barely missed day 2 by 2 points.

Josh Claytor. There is nothing wrong in being ____. I joke about it all the time =D

Slops

To living in deep Southern Illinois, where you got to make 50-mile, one-way drives just to obtain magic. I’m glad that I know the locations where I can obtain them dirt-cheap =D. In addition, the very high property tax values in the area don’t help matters out either.

Myths and Legends in Kansas City: never again I shall show up to events at this venue. (Note to Dan Bates – you didn't miss the regionals at all, so don’t feel bad about it.)

To myself for having a brainfart on the last Cardshark article I wrote. I forgot that Scott Lipp’s nickname is “Spanky”; I referred Sean Tracy as that nickname. Quiksand let me know about that one. I’m sorry for getting your names confused (I have never gotten them right ever since a certain PTQ final sometime in 2000).

To my church for having an important meeting on the 29th =(. I have to miss out on playing with a few buddies because I have to attend church to vote on a new minister.

To myself for being sick for this weekend with a nasty sinus infection. It never fails – I always seem to get sick right before a major MTG event in the St. Louis area, and I still regret my decision on playing in the Planeshift prerelease with bronchitis despite a halfway-decent record I had that weekend.

To Wal Mart in Mt. Vernon, IL for selling the card sleeves, where half of them had factory defects. These sleeves weren’t even ultra-pro sleeves, but an off-market brand. Don’t waste your money on these sleeves.

looked promising in limited, more so than constructed (I have an awful feeling that Combo Winter Part Deux will occur this winter). But after the prerelease, I noticed several things:

1. Tons of matches, including 4 of the 5 matches I had, going into 3 games. If they didn’t go to 3 games, it was either due to a player getting a bad card pool to build a deck, or mana flood/mana screw. This will mean long matches and unintentional draws during the PTQ season that begins in October.

2. It will take time for players to get used to morphing. Brainfarts will happen from time to time, and not all instances of playing a non-morphing card face down will be done on purpose. However, enforcing the rules has to be done strictly, but in a fair manner.

3. My suggestion to players is to read the Onslaught
