CardShark Content - Kyle Cooper (2/5/2006)

[Editor's note: This is apparently talking about drafting triple Guildpact. It's never mentioned, but it is pretty obvious from the decklist. I just wanted to give you a heads-up so you'd know what you were reading.]

On the Saturday after the release of Guildpact I went down to my local card shop to play some in the single elimination drafts. Going into the first draft it seemed fairly obvious that there were three choices to draft: Gruul, Orzhov, and Izzet. I chose Izzet and drafted a pretty strong deck with almost all the right cards and close to the right numbers of them. Unfortunately I made a few small mistakes in constructing the deck that weakened it a little bit. For the first match I played a strong Orzhov build and got trashed game one. In game two I pulled a quick reversal with a Steamcore Weird

followed by swinging the next turn with two big Dragonaunts. In game three my opponent destroyed me again. So battered and beaten I watched the second flight build their decks and start playing while I waited for the third flight to start. And as I watched inspiration struck! I was watching a friend of mine construct his Izzet deck when I looked over and saw what I thought to be a five color pile of junk. But I was wrong. It was a five color green deck. The idea behind it was that it would take advantage of all the best cards for each color (like Steamcore Weird

So that is what I tried to draft and to have fun with. Although it was tough, I came out with an okay build in the end, especially because of three lucky last pack Starfletchers and a Pillory of the Sleepless

and Double Steamcore I eliminated this problem but by then he had time to build his forces and overran me.

Game three was a strange tie breaker round where first player to damage the other player won. Thanks to my five colors I sided out black and white for assorted green first turn drops and won.

in my hand and no black mana source. This might have been prevented if I had made the correction to my mana base as noted earlier.

Summary:
There are other decks to draft besides the basic guild decks. I have now seen five color green take both a first and second place in drafts. It might not be the best deck to draft but while all of your opponents fight for cards, you have a lot more options. It is almost impossible for your table mates to draft all the cards that you need so you are bound to get enough good stuff to build a decent deck. The main weaknesses with the deck are that it is very easy to be too heavy on one color and that it can be rather inconsistent and tricky to play. The deck that inspired me was much more solid than mine. The biggest differences in it were that it ran only two Steamcore Weird

s, it had a slightly more reliable mana base, and it had big drops to play once it stabilized that my deck lacked. Other than that, in both of my drafts most of the players fought over the Orzhov and Izzet cards and the one or two players that went for Gruul managed to make much more solid decks. The Izzet deck in general seemed to be much trickier to build and play correctly and most of the Izzet players suffered from some play mistake or build mistake that cost them a game.

Happy Drafting!
