What’s green and flies 90 miles an hour?
Super Pickle!

With the release of Guildpact and the R/G Gruul guild I have been hearing and seeing a lot about a new r/g beats deck in Standard. There are tales of it being the new aggro and how it can be the fastest deck in a very slow Standard. However, I feel that the lists I’ve been seeing are more slow and solid r/g beats than good old fashioned, risk it all for the fast kill Frog in a Blender (what’s green and red and flies 90 miles an hour?) The most recently powerful Frog in a Blender deck was the one based mainly on Odyssey block cards. Frog in a Blender has been around long before Odyssey, but I like to think of the Odyssey build as being the high point for the deck since it was the only deck out of several fast decks in Type II that could deliver a consistent turn four kill. Unfortunately for us, the current Type II is lacking a particular mongrel and his counterparts RmllcnkgTemper

of doom and the best we can do is an occasional turn five kill. Nonetheless we can pull together a very solid build that can be highly competitive in Type II and probably take the prize for fastest deck in the format. I will start by looking at what seems to be the conventional build of the new r/g and then I will give you my version of the deck that I have named “Pickle in Blender” (with some tomatoes of course), which I think is much stronger. Why Pickle? Quite frankly the deck doesn’t measure up to Frog in a Blender and it reminds me more of a lumpy green vegetable soaked in salt water. Fortunately the rest of Standard is pretty much a lumpy vegetable too. The alternative name is (drum roll): “Super Pickle”. Now without further ado I give you the boring, generic, and not as strong version of Type II r/g beats that I came up with in the style of the current popular lists:

. The only time it proves to be that useful is when it attacks with a Jitte and becomes an 8/7 unblockable. But this brings me to my next point. I know that this will be very controversial, but Jitte is not good in this deck. It is too slow and it will often be destroyed when your opponent casts their own Jitte even if they have no creatures on the board. Moldervine Cloak

is faster in the sense that it gives a creature +3/+3 on the turn it is played instead of having to be played, get counters on it and then use it. MC is also reusable, and it isn’t legendary or an artifact. I think that this makes it much stronger for this deck even if it isn’t the best choice for other decks. Also Jitte is the main reason why this deck can’t handle Burning-Tree Shaman which is one of the best things that ever happened to r/g. Jitte + Pain lands + Gruul Guildmage

might be the right choice. My view is that the deck focuses on speed and being able to knock out a slightly bigger creature or hit your opponent for more will be more useful and much speedier.

Speaking of speed, it’s time for us to take a look at the deck the goes 90 miles an hour and flies (unlike the previous 75-mile an hour deck). It’s time for Super Pickle or Watermel – I mean Pickle in a Blender. Watermelon would make the red work, but watermelon is lacking the same flare that only a pickle has. [Editor’s note: He’s definitely right on that one.]

Brief Match up Overview:
Ghazi Glare decks: In general, laugh and hope for a Burning-Tree Shaman. However be careful because if you don’t get a Shaman, you have to rely on speed and try and blow through their lock before it is complete. After bringing in some Naturalize

Mono Blue and UW control
This is actually a kind of tough match up. If you go first, you have a decent chance at winning, but if you go second it could be tough. Try and get creatures swinging as early and as quickly as you can because once blue has lands they will counter any new threats and from there quickly take control of the board away from you.
