CardShark Content - Kyle James (6/16/2004)

Okay as this is my first article, I thought I’d introduces myself. I’m Kyle James and I haven’t necessarily been playing competitive magic that long but I have done pretty well. For the five months I have been playing I¹ve won 8 smaller tournaments, Friday Night Magic¹s and other small tournaments, and had a 145th place, disappointing, but fun trip to regionals. Now it may be my first article and I may have been playing for a short period of time but I think a lot of people are obsessively going over combo decks and how viable control is I felt this was the perfect time for Bidding to be big again.

Goblin Bidding was originally plain goblins mixed with Black in order to handle control decks in the format. With control and combo coming back I think the Black/Red deck will be better then the Red/Green versions being used with Ravager Affinity around. The reason being as with a lot of control making appearances after clamp is banned I think that Black is the best way to go. As for right now, pre-bannings and pre-Fifth Dawn, Red-splashing green is the best deck to play. It has the power to beat ravager with its ticking time bomb Clickslither

and has an okay late game vs. ravager and other decks just like bidding. But it doesn’t have Patriarchs Bidding, which beats the control decks that should come back post-banning.

Fifth Dawn is going to make goblins change there builds entirely. The Fifth Dawn cards for goblins are looked at pretty highly even though there are few. At least there¹s no more arguing if clamp or clampless goblins are better because Skullclamp

has now left the picture entirely and there is really no competition for those extra slots as affinity doesn¹t need to be checked as hard as control and combo need to after Fifth Dawn comes into play. The Ravager decks won’t completely rule the format and other decks will be seeing heavy play such as control.

The deck is still pretty standard, as a lot of the goblin decks will cut some of their heavy creature removal and artifact removal from their main decks. This seems sensible, as there isn’t much to attack but Damping Matrix

You may or may not see the power in using this card in Goblin Bidding, or for those goblin players that have seen the power of this card you are waiting for your play-set to come in the mail. However this card is actually going to be widely played in the new goblin decks. For myself I have already got my players-set by packs and trades. However the card is good for this deck for several reasons which I’ll get through later. First here is my post Fifth Dawn, post bannings, Goblin Bidding deck.

This is aggros worst friend. It pings out pesky annoying 1/1 creatures and with your sacrificing engines this can take out huge creatures also when you need to. I wouldn’t leave home without 4 of these in the main deck no matter what the format was. It helps vs. COP red and also it can be used as an engine with siege gang and prospector after Bidding.

I had originally taken these out after Ravager had come into play in type-2 because of how pitiful these were vs. Ravager Affinity. These cards can easily win games vs. combos small amount of blockers and they also do huge amounts of damage vs. control. And they win games after Bidding. There defiantly strong cards in the deck.

As for the little red men this makes them mean. Paying 1 for Piledrivers, 4 for Siege-Gang Commanders and countless other uses. Not to mention it gives all the creatures in your deck this ability called haste. In my terms this card is broken and should be the main core of your deck.

4-Siege-Gang Commander
When I first made this deck three months ago this was somehow left out of my build. For some reason I felt it cost too much, as in 5 mana for a 2/2 and some useless goblin tokens. I sent my decklist to a friend for help when I got an immediate response back. Where are the siege gangs??? Wait a second. I back track pull 4 useless goblins out and put siege gangs in. I immediately continued to go shopping on e-bay and got my deck built. The first time I played with the deck, I go third turn warchief, fourth turn siege gang, fifth turn siege gang, AND sixth turn siege gang. Yes, I did win that game. I love this card in goblins and I can’t see leaving it out. It comes back with an additional 3 tokens when you activate bidding, it can come back with Oversold Cemetery

This card creates an engine with Siege-Gang Commander after you cast Patriarchs Bidding. It also can give you second turn warchief or sharpshooter. Definitely a good card.

4-Gempalm Incenerator-
I expect a lot of goblin decks with control decks coming back and this card kills sharpshooters in the mirror match. It is defiantly an excellent card to run in the deck and it¹s personally a favorite of mine. In the past killing eternal dragons and exalted angels was fun with this card. It gives you great card advantage, which is very important. Look at it this way, Kill a creature and draw a card, as an instant also. Without Skullclamp

belcher for about 20+ damage from the new combo decks, wh buys you time to kill their 1/1 incubator tokens hopefully with a lucky sharpshooter. It doesn’t always let you stay alive but when it does work it really stops the combo player as they don’t have any artifact lands or anything else now as they already wasted everything on casting there cards.

3-Patriarchs Bidding
This card is actually the key to beating control. It¹s very useful against mass removal and it’s actually good vs. other agro decks too. It’s always fun to play Patriarchs Bidding and see the control player scoop. Bidding and getting around COP reds is even more fun.

Not a lot more to say about this card but it is very good..

One of these first turn devastates combo and it’s pretty needed. I think these will really be very useful in the combo match-ups. I¹ve only tested a little but it delayed them enough that I could get enough damage through that I won while there trying to recover. It also lets you see how there going to set-up in the next few turns so if you don¹t have anything else to do plunge down a few cards and get what you need to disrupt them or get enough damage through. It’s a very good card vs. combo. No testing vs. clampless ravager with this card but I don¹t think its any good vs. ravager.

if you need it real quick from your deck so getting one when you need it isn¹t that difficult.

3-Oversold cemetery
These replace the Patriarch Biddings in the mirror match and also come in vs. control decks. Though many don¹t use these vs. control, with U/W coming back it gives them yet another threat every turn to worry about and something other then bidding to worry about countering. Also you can get something such as siege gang revival going vs. control and it¹s worth it. If it’s against R.W they like targeting 1 creature at a time so pretty much you¹ll get a warchief back every turn, but its better then nothing. Besides it’s won me a lot of the games vs. control that I¹ve tested so I¹m pretty sure this is the best card to bring in against them. For the mirror match, it gets back Gempalm Incenerator, which is just evil in the mirror match, and it also can get back siege gang or sharpshooter when they kill yours.

1-Patriarch’s Bidding-Yet another threat for control to handle. With control getting big this is defiantly a must card in the SB. Not much else to say about it.

It also comes in against clampless Ravager match-ups (I’m still not sure how well ravager will do in the new format). This card is very versatile and is well worth the SB slot.

Bury target non-black creature.
(kills off the new white bringers that are being used in conjunction with mindslaver with the newer tooth and nail decks)

I don’t have any secure match-results yet as I have not tested every match as much as I would like but this deck looks very good in the new Type-2. It can handle most of the things thrown at it and it has a good creature base. Its one of the strongest decks there is and it has a good engine. I hope everyone has a good time attacking with there goblins. Also for control players, the best thing to do against goblins is to use a good amount of blue counters in your deck, or use a lot of mass removal. That’s all for now and I hope you enjoyed my first article. I felt that going over each card again is important because a lot of people play goblins, and you ask them why a card is in there they just say, well everyone else plays it. Every card in your deck should be in there for a reason and I think you should go over each reason with any deck. As for this deck, I made sure I knew why each card was in the deck. If I learned anything from the time I played in this game is when building a deck, you may be even using a deck everyone else is using, but lay out all the possible cards that work in the deck and go over each card that could work in the deck
