(editor's note: I know we've most likely all seen this deck before, but this is just such a well-written article that I couldn't resist)

INTRODUCTION

When you play Type I, you go for broken. Pure and simple. Don’t let other people tell you a deck is “unfair,” “stupid,” or that you shouldn’t be playing it. They’re just mad because they didn’t win. Type I is as near as a DCI-sanctioned event gets to Constructed Anything Goes, and Anything Goes means punches below the belt. And if you’re smart you’ll throw as many punches below the belt as you can.

That being said, it is difficult to find a Type I deck that doesn’t include several of the Power Nine (basically the most expensive cards in Magic). Because of this, many players (including myself, until recently) have turned their backs on Type I. This is understandable because it doesn’t really make sense to spend the money on one card for Type I that you could on several entire decks in Type II or Extended.

Players should reconsider playing Type I because of the simple fact that most people don’t own any of the Power Nine. The best decks at local tournaments--I repeat, local tournaments-- are going to be Extended decks bolstered by relatively inexpensive cards that are banned in Extended but legal in Type I, such as Goblin Recruiter

The purpose of the deck that I’m presenting is to take advantage of many inexpensive broken cards in Type I to quickly and consistently produce a combo that wins the game. This combo usually goes off faster than most of the fastest Extended decks turned broken, and the sideboard of this deck can be filled with 1-and-2-cost spells that hose the decks that either are faster than it or try to shut the combo down.

The combo this deck uses is playing Animate Dead

, repeating the process as many times as you like. Every time your permanents come into play they come into play UNTAPPED, which means you can generate as much mana as you desire from your lands that keep coming into play. The third part of the combo isn’t as specific, and can be any card that kills your opponent by investing a ridiculous amount of mana into it, such as Fireball

.

My deck is sort of a “work in progress” in that it’s not an optimal build, but that’s always going to be the case with a budget deck. The reason why I didn’t list the optimal build is that there are some cards that aren’t necessary and can be interchanged with better or worse cards, depending on your budget or particular access to cards. After the decklist I’ll explain what cards are necessary, what cards I use because they are inexpensive and effective, and what cards I would replace if I could.

SIDEBOARDING

Either create a general sideboard to handle common problems (such as counterspells, discard effects), or know the environment and sideboard accordingly. If you haven’t noticed, all the spells that you’ll be casting without infinite mana are either 1-cost or 2-cost. Your sideboard should reflect this trend. Energy Flux

, pushing back your win to Turn 4. As you can see from these situations (which were real games played consecutively), this deck is consistent, fast and relatively easy to play.
