CardShark Content - Lorien Elleman (11/27/2005)

Since Extended season was approaching, I did what most other PTQ-ers do and looked online for a solid deck to play at my local PTQ. What I read told me that the metagame was basically a rock-paper-scissors format of Tog-Affinity-Boros, respectively. Not having a lot of time to experiment with a rogue deck that could break the metagame, I decided to go with a green-light Dredgatog deck after testing Madness Tog (basically a U/G madness deck that splashes B for Psychatog

; with the metagame of a PTQ being sort of unpredictable, I assumed there would at least be more aggro than control, so I wanted to be the one with answers instead of trying to outrace my opponent.

For those of you not familiar with Dredgatog, it basically breaks Life From the Loam with the help of Gifts Ungiven

Most of the cards are self explanatory, and the ones that aren’t I will describe how I used them in different matches.

There ended up being 44 people at the Albuquerque PTQ Honolulu, which meant there would be 6 rounds cutting to top 8. The last and only other time I had played at a PTQ I scrubbed out pretty bad with R/B Goblins, so my expectations for this tournament weren’t too high, especially because I had played all of maybe ten games with the deck. I just hoped to stay away from Affinity and the mirror match (I find control vs. control to be the hardest type of game to play correctly).

My first matchup was against a guy playing a janky Affinity deck with Viridian Joiner

on the board; if the Joiner had 5 power or more, he could tap for 5 mana, use the Staff’s ability to untap the Joiner and the Staff, floating 1, and could do the process over and over again, generating infinite mana, and with that mana, infinite card draw, infinite life gain, etc. Anyway, we only played two games and he never got the combo off. I wasn’t sure whether he really hadn’t seen it before or if he was just trying to act like he didn’t know what it was to convince me he wasn’t playing one. in my hand, but I never drew the Deed, so the game was his.

Final record: 4-1-2

I was very pleased with my performance, especially because I had had so little experience with the deck and also since all of my matchups were the ones I was most afraid of. I wished my Affinity friend good luck and I left. The Scepter-Chant guy ended up winning the tournament and the ticket to Honolulu.

If I could make any improvements on the deck, I would find a way to have a better matchup against Affinity. Without Deed, it’s too easy to get run over, and a lot of Affinity builds are main-decking Pithing Needle

just doesn’t seem like enough; for Affinity you need answers that are better than just one-for-one trades. If it would be possible, splashing white for Kataki, War’s Wage would be really solid. I think that this will be possible by playing with one of the black/white dual lands that will come out later in the Ravnica block. Even if you just played one, you would be able to find it with any of your fetch lands.

Well, that’s it. Thanks for reading this article and I hope it has been helpful.
