and the newest (and one of the coolest) game mechanics, people are scrambling to build decks that try to put madness to the test.

For those living in a hole, madness is a new ability that can be activated when a card is discarded for any reason. There is a cost associated with casting a madness card that has been discarded and your opponent still has the opportunity to counter your spell. Each color has two madness cards. The white and black ones are pretty weak for constructed play, but the red, green and blue ones are fantastic.

Below I have created a new madness deck based around red and green. It funtions as a beatdown/direct damage deck and tries to off your opponent fast. Blue was very tempting as part of this deck, but it was too control oriented and didn't combine well with either red or green because neither compliment the control aspects of blue.

For the record, I have done very little playtesting with this deck and have not really tuned it against any metagame. I am merely presenting a solid deck with very efficient cards that have amazing synergy with each other. If you like the idea, please by all means expand on it and start play testing against some of the current field to see if this deck is worthy for Type 2 Regionals in your area. I know I am planning on bring this one...

This deck is all about synergy. The main aspects are fast creatures, 3 discard mechanisms (one of which provides direct damage), 16 madness spells, 8 of which are creatures and 8 as direct damage and the rest of the deck supports threshold.

I will discuss each card below and the reasons for the choices:

Basking Rootwala
This card is simply awesome against control. It's a one drop that usually gets out before counterspell backup is available. It has a 0 madness cost, so it can be cast for free often. It usually just beats and beats for 3 against control decks while they spend several turns looking for that one critical bounce spell.

Another great anti-control spell. It gets out early and is immune to most removal and bounce. As this decks gets to threshold, this critter turns into a 3/3 and helps finish your opponent off.

As most limited players know, this creature is god. Attacking with the 2/2 and a handful of cards is bluff enough to get him through most of the time. With the backup of great madness spells, you don't mind pitching to this guy to make him bigger. The discard ability is important in this deck as another way to cheaply cast your more expensive spells like arrogant wurm for the madness cost. Also, don't forget this mongrel can change colors... never let that Shadowmage Infiltrator

The werebear is a great 1/1 for 2 that gets to be a 4/4 when this deck reaches threshold. It also provides the added benefit of mana acceleration (which is really important to this deck late game). This deck functions well at 3 mana and then again at 7 mana. The seven is necessary to be able to use Meteor Storm

Yet another great anti-control card. This one comes out turn 2 for a red and a green mana. It sits around for awhile while you build up some mana and empty most of your hand. It really shines when you get out the Grafted Skullcap

. Each turn, you draw two cards and you need to discard these by the end of the turn. If you can't find anything good to do with these cards, you can activate the storm and discard both cards to do four damage to a creature or player. Sometimes you may want to do it to the player depending on the threats on the table. If your opponent has few creatures you might want to throw the four at the creatures and then attack with your creatures.

This card is amazing in red/green decks that play their hand out fast. If you have 0 cards in hand, then the discard aspect of this card isn't that important. It also has great synergy with Ensnaring Bridge

reads: ´´At the beginning of your draw step, draw a card. At the end of your turn, discard your hand.´´ The major use of this is to play it around turn 4 or so, or whenever you are down to 1 or 2 cards you don't care about, because you will probably lose the cards in your hand. Then you draw two cards a turn. If you play more than one of these, the affect is cummulative. Also, it synergizes well with meteor storm and mongrel. You can pitch the cards to the mongrel if you aren't going to play them, or you can activate meteor storm and do 4 damage a turn to your opponent or their creatures. Also, the cards you discard can be activated for madness. Rootwalla

Can you say ´´Card Advantage´´? I knew you could and you will be saying it all the way to the bank the next time you go four for 1 by picking off a birds of paradise, llanowar elf and basking rootwala. This spell lets you deal 4 damage divided between any numberof creatures and players. Watch out for the three red in the hard casting cost as it is difficult to get sometimes. The madness cost isn't that great, but it is possible. This and Arrogant Wurm

Since this deck finds threshold so easily these guys really kick butt. They can do 2 points of damage to a target at threshold. They do 1 damage each turn to use though, so be careful about the amount of damage you take to these against aggressive decks.

instead of the nimble mongoose, take out the werebear in favor of harrow or fire/ice, run 4 city of brass in place of the shivan oasis. This build
is even more focused on direct damage and the lavamancer is just amazing
in a deck like this. Treshold sometimes takes a bit too long to get too in this deck, so this build may be a quicker kill then waiting around to get your skullcap/meteor storm lock down.

That about wraps it up. At this decks best it is an extremely fast and Synergistic deck that works well. It is also easy and fun to play and has amazing sideboard tech against a wide range of decks. Give it a try and see if it drives you to madness!
