Introduction:

It’s that time of year again! Time for one of the best Magic weekends of the summer! If you are lucky to live in the Ohio region or surrounding states, get your butt in gear and get to Origins. I have been going for the past 3 years, and I find it is one of the best values for the dollar. No matter what your playing style (pro, semi-pro or casual) you will find a lot to test your abilities and have fun.

It may seem a little intimidating when you get there. The events are numerous and scattered all over the weekend. When I was planning my trip this year, I checked out the Origins site (originsgames.com) and then the Professional Events site (professional-events.com) to see what is happening. These sites sort the events by the DAY. If you are like me, I am only interested in the events by CATEGORY. I sorted them so I could best plan my budget and time. This made it easy for me, and I think it will benefit you too. So here it goes:

NON-STANDARD FORMATS

These are my favorite events at Origins. For the more casual player, these events allow people to get together and play some fun yet challenging tournaments that encourage innovative deck building skills.

*** CREATURE FEATURE *** @ SAT: 1pm

First off, take anything that isn't a creature or basic land out of our extended deck. Next, add in more creatures or basic lands until you have a 60-card deck again. Finally, make sure your deck is nothing but creatures and basic land. Presto! You have the Creature Feature deck of 2003. For a little help, try using as many come-into-play effect (187) or morph creatures as you can. Last year, since Creature Feature decks could contain a few non-creature spells, Mortal Combat

Ok, this is my baby. This is the only non-Wizards MTG event at the entire convention. We here at Cardshark had to pull some strings, but all systems are GO! Professional Events will not be running this event, and you can get all info on this site under the Peasant link in the Resources section. It will be a great time as we had a fun time last year. Make sure to see that the abusive uncommons have been banned or restricted before building your deck.

Now that you have planned your weekend, I have some tips for you that I learned along the way.

FOOD:

There some good places that you can grab a quick bite. If you go to the neighboring Hyatt hotel, there are some fast-food restaurants in the lower levels. For breakfast, I enjoyed the ´´Chicken and Eggs´´ restaurant with their egg and ham sandwiches. For lunch and dinner, the lines will get INSANE. Subway and other good restaurants are available, but be prepared to wait in line forever. It won't be shorter than walking way off-site.

However, there is a Damon's bar and grill located next door to the hotel. The wait is usually not longer than 30 minutes during their peak period and the food is decent. Their ribs are quite good and distinct in taste. Expect to pay from $10-$15 for a beverage and hearty meal. Make sure to grab a free ´´playmaker´´ box for a little trivia. The games usually last an hour and you can test your knowledge while you wait for your food or seat.

Time saving tip for Damons: belly up to the bar and order there. If you are eating alone, you can get full service there too! While sitting at the bar, you can get half-off chicken wings and some other specials from 4-7pm on Thursday and Friday.

For a cheapskate like me, I will be scouting for a McD's for my breakfast and plan on porkin' up! Powerbars are grubby (and to most people - they taste bad). However, they are much better for you than candy bars. They will provide more sustenance and vitamins that will make you feel better for the time between proper meals. I recommend ´´Clif´´ bars or ´´Harvest´´ Powerbars for good protein, nutrition, and taste. I got hooked on these bars when I dropped weight, and they can kill the hunger cravings for hours. Get a water bottle too and keep refilling it at the drinking fountains. It beats paying over two dollars for each soda you buy at the convention!

FREE FUN: The Annual Smithee Awards

I have to plug the Smithee Awards since they are my highlight in my past years attending Origins. The ´´Smithee Committee´´ is a proud group of movie enthusiasts who provide a quick-paced program to the WORST in movie cinema. They show 5 clips in humorous categories that show mistakes, comical moments, and things that have to be seen to be believed! Keep the kids away, this show is for adults only! At times, is not for the faint of heart. However, it is the funniest 3+ hours you will spend watching clips and laughing you ass off! This year, it is planned for Saturday night at 7pm and IT'S FREE! You should stop in and check it out if you are around that night. Also, go to smitheeawards.com for more information.

GOTH/INDUSTRIAL CLUB: the OUTLAND

Ok, this G.I.M.P. (as Dork Tower would say, ´´Gothic-ly Inclined Male Person´´) enjoys a night of industrial music with a hint of retro/techno thrown in. I was introduced to the Outland club that played an amazing set last year with a cheap cover charge. That night the DJ didn’t beat match, but the set included some staples, some older songs, and some great electro. I am not current on the new Industrial scene, but I heard some classic tracks from PWEI, Skinny Puppy, Informatik, Front 242, and Ned's Atomic Dustbin last year and I can't wait to go again. The club features a second DJ set outside in an enclosed, fenced-in area. For the adventurous, there is an S&M area too. Err. Um. I'll spend my evening on the dance floor… My sorry suburban ass is jus' fine there, thank you very much!

Google said their homepage was at www.cringe.com/outland - and it looks pretty cool. There is a pretty good review and summary of this club here:

BEGINNER'S GUIDE

First off, go to originsgames.com for the site info. You need to get there before anything else. Reserving a hotel at this time would be a safe bet too.

If this is your first Origins convention, you want to bring a lot of cash or access to money. There are ATMs available in the building at your disposal. A safe bet is to bring about $100 to spend a day. Why so much? Take your badge, hotel costs, entry fees, food expenses, and travel money into account. Credit cards are nice, but you can only use them when you buy tickets. Professional Events will be taking cash for the side events, but the main events will need registration (cash or charge) at the base of the elevators inside the complex. Be prepared to wait in line (and don't wait until the last minute)!

If you need to refuel, goe to Java's Cyper-Espresso Bar. They will be open 23 hours a day during the con. If you need coffee at 4am, you will have to wait an hour, but it's worth it. They also have high-speed Internet, and that's how I am typing this update right now. Handy.

Besides playing Magic, make sure to check out the exhibit hall, artist gallery, and the free seminars and movies offered to all convention guests. It would be a shame to miss out on the convention itself since your badge fees are paying for them too. Check ahead in the Origins booklet and website for artist signings too.

Finally, make sure to DRESS WARMLY. It may be 90 degrees outside, but the convention will be cold enough to grow mold. The air-conditioning will make you want to wear pants and a long-sleeve shirt. Don't say I didn’t warn you.

Thanks for reading. I hope this is helped out. If you want to chat, just look for the tall guy with glasses wearing the Cardshark hockey jersey.
