• Suggestions for selling commons on Cardshark

Looking for strategy in Limited? Standard? Type 1? Better click that back button and look elsewhere.

This is an article for Cardshark buyers and sellers who want to maximize their market potential.

Now, that sounded like a fly-by-night scheme to get your money and invest in some pyramid group. Oh no. This article looks at those cards that litter your house like tiny bits of fur that shed from your house pet. I proudly introduce to you the…

TOP 10 COMMON LISTS for COMMON CARDS!

Ok. Why is this important? Well, if you sell any cards through the site, you may wonder if it is worth it to list your commons. You probably have a TON of them lying around. They are usually left on the drafting table at your local store. I see scores of them left around the empty tables at GenCon and Origins to be picked up by a kid or a janitor. This guide may help you decide to pour over your collection to make a buck or two (but hopefully more).

Now I have been selling on Cardshark since its inception (February 1, 2001) and I just had my 1000th transaction. Since then, I listed every single card in my collection until this June. Every common, uncommon, and rare was carefully sorted, alphabetized, and entered. So what changed this behavior? I had too many cards and too little time. With my impending marriage (self congratulatory behavior) I have to reduce the boxes upon boxes of unmovable stock and keep what may eventually sell. Combining households means less space for my junk. Besides, I was tired of looking at the hordes of junk commons lying around.

As a favor, my friend at Cardshark did some database crunching and made me some top 10 lists. I decided to keep those cards in the list, check their behavior for 1 month, and then report them back to you… We chose the last three blocks since you will probably have most of these guys scattered about. Enough prattle – on with the crowd favorite: the TOP 10 LISTS!

Gee whiz, looks like people like those artifact lands! Hmmm, can’t understand why (does “derf derf” go here)? With affinity everywhere in standard, the lands and creatures benefit the most. The Spellbomb is critical to kill all sorts of creatures with protection from red facing your goblin deck. This contains very little surprises.

Here is another artifact land at #1 again! I am a little curious to see if these numbers will stay so close together. The top two may be the only ones to keep posting on Cardshark. I am not sure if there are a ton of new decks that will use Darksteel commons, but time (and the numbers) will tell.

Since I asked for this data in June, there wasn’t enough time to gather any Fifth Dawn data. So let’s go back to the block that’s rotating out in a couple of months: Onslaught

Looking at these two sets, I see no great need to scour through your collection to pull out any significant cards, but you may wish to get your sliver cards out. Casual players love their sliver cards. The uncommon slivers will sell too (not to mention the older ones from Tempest and Stronghold). The land cycling creatures are great too. s, pull em’ out and sell em’ (that is if you don’t have them in your favorite madness deck). It would make sense that this common would help encourage the outlier for the next set.

It is always fun looking back at the commons that shaped standard and extended tournaments in ages past. Even if vintage or 1.5 decks aren’t running madness/threshold synergy (I’m thinking they’re not), you may wish to pull those great green creatures and put them up for sale. You could have a couple of dollars just sitting in your common box.

Threshold decks (I never played)… Your guess is probably better than mine!

Now you have all of the info that I have. I sorted through all of my commons, unlisted everyone that wasn’t on the top 10 lists, and I waited for the results. I found that reducing my inventory helped shorten my “finding the card” time while I still sold many commons above. When I was done drafting in my area, I would only look for specific cards instead of taking home a big pile of cards to sort. The big sellers this month were artifact lands from Mirrodin and Darksteel. I did however sell other random cards from both of those sets and some Scour

ge (?!?), and it was well worth it.

So the question must be: SHOULD I SELL MY COMMONS ON CARDSHARK? My answer is YES, but make it easy on yourself. Commons help pad out sales, so it is good to include them. Follow these rules and you will save time and make money.

1. Use the bulk-listing tool. Before the Bulk Selling Tool, listing EVERY card was a pain. If you have (what you think) is a full set of commons from a particular set, go to the bulk-listing tool and import 4 of each card. It is very rare that I ever sell more than 4 of any common card. If you sell 4 of them, make a note to add another 4 back into your inventory. Be careful to check (and manage) your inventory when you know that 4 of a great card may be in question.

2. List your cards for more than $.05! I know you may think that I just want to drive prices up, but is it worth your time to sell a card for $.05? How long did it take to sort the cards? How long did it take to import them? Now you made $.15!?! Your time is probably worth more than that! I would suggest at least $.10 for each common.

3. Speaking of local shops, have yours BUY your extra common cards. I know this is a long shot, but make an offer that he can’t refuse! Offer to sell them at a penny each (so he/she can have them for a nickel each in an unsorted box). The owner doesn’t have to sort them and makes four cents profit per card. Sweeten the deal if a penny is too high. Always remember – your extra commons are worth nothing to you and a penny (or half penny) is better than nothing. Another way to sweeten the deal is to ask for store credit rather than cash. That way, the owner will be getting a better deal (and you will be closer to your goal – GETTING RID OF YOUR COMMONS). Remind the owner that kids from around the neighborhood always have spare change in their pockets.

4. You can use these top 10 lists OR the TOP 20 MAGIC COMMONS SOLD in the RESOURCES tab. These will help you pick what you should be saving from your draft and what you should be throwing into a giant shoebox. They help narrow your efforts on selling cards that are worth something more than nothing.

5. How about a garage sale? 5,000 commons for $25 (or best offer) sound good to you? Older people will probably pick these up for their grandchildren. Throw some uncommon cards in there too for good measure.

6. Finally, for you older folks, see if GOODWILL can take them. Get a receipt from them, and write it off your taxes. This only works if you itemize your taxes and keep receipts, but it can be worth a lot. Giving away 5,000 cards or more makes sense based on what you are claiming. Don’t get too greedy (and see if they take them in the first place).

I hope this helps your quest in selling common cards on Cardshark. I enjoy the thrill of selling because it is nice to turn your hobby into profit (or have it pay for itself). Cardshark allowed many of us to become our own dealer in a way, so remember that your time IS money. Sort selectively, and keep your inventory neat and organized. If you spend 30 minutes looking for a dime, you could have found that much between your couch cushions or on the floor of your car… Good luck and happy selling!
