CardShark Content - Marcus Anderson (6/12/2002)

Ok, it is time to get your commons box out and prepare for the impending Peasant revolution at Origins and GenCon! Let’s set up the rules first…

1 – This is NOT an article about type 2 or ANY sanctioned format. Consider it a cheap-ass Type 1 (kinda…)

2 – This is for the casual gamer. Do you like originality? Do you like saving money? Do you like older cards? Do you want to play a tournament where rogue decks rule? Peasant Magic may be your calling!

3 – The deck and sideboard should be ALL commons except for 5 uncommon cards.

4 – The card must have been on the common sheet once to be considered common (for example: Fountain of Youth

was printed on an Uncommon sheet in Antiquities).

6 – The official card rarity and errata list is at the Crystal Keep (www.crystalkeep.com).

In each article, expect me to list the rules above. Even though we had around 100 people for the first Peasant Magic event at GenCon last year, it never hurts to remind people of the rules. Besides, it stops people from emailing me who think this is some crazy Type 1 tech or something it is not.

For this article, I will be talking about the artifacts and the lands. These cards are very important to inspect because they can be used in ANY deck. You will hear some of the more controversial cards mentioned in this list – so be prepared for a philosophical discussion (read: rant) at the end of this article.

Since it has been a year since I have drafted a Peasant article. I am going to use my playtesting from this summer as basis for this article. Don’t worry, I will get to the deck lists and testing match-ups later in this month. For now, I will stick to cards and their colors.

Please take note that some cards are great, but too situational. In other words, there are some amazing cards that have synergy in particular decks, but not in all decks. A prime example of a situational card is Phyrexian War Beast

This guy has a LOT of drawbacks. If it gets bounced or killed, you take damage and lose a land. However, for only three mana, you have a beat-stick. It is bolt proof, and it is colorless damage for those white players to worry about. This guy is like its big brother, the Phyrexian Negator

. Sure, it isn’t as big and can’t trample, but if the opponent can’t stop it – it smashes its way to victory. This card is great in aggressive decks, but decks that need a solid mana base may not appreciate this guy. If it is a creature blocker you need, you may wish to search for better cards within that color.

As you can see by the example above, the ARTIFACT colors have to be discussed first. The key common cards can be abused by each color. They give colors a way to deal with things that (normally) they cannot touch. These cards inflict damage, kill creatures, or stomp on the opponent.

Due to recent errata, both artifacts trigger at the beginning of the upkeep. Check the Crystal Keep for the rulings, but both cards were changed in late August, 2001. This “beginning” change helps out the both by not allowing as many tricks for the opponent to empty or fill their hand before the damage goes on the stack. Some players may know of some cool tricks to reduce the damage, but many will just take the damage and grumble in disgust.

In addition, if you are playing against “protection from your color here” creatures, they usually have a toughness of one. For four mana and a flick of the wrist, you can kill off a color-hoser and up to two more in future turns. Have a regenerating creature eating your face? Put some counters on the critter and say so long, you hoser! It doesn’t hurt to speak like the McKenzie brothers when you get rid of your deck’s worst enemies.

from the new set? The soldier is now a fat 3/6, non-tapping creature that can plink at the end of the opponent’s turn. Savage.

As a final note, any creature enchantment is risky. However, the price the opponent pays for not dealing with the enchanted critter will be heavy in the long run.

Now for the most controversial topic in Peasant Magic: the Lands. Many lands are considered common and uncommon due to loopholes in the laws of Peasant Magic. These rules may have been a bit shortsighted by saying, “Any card printed on a common sheet at one time is considered common. Any card printed on an uncommon sheet at one time is considered uncommon.”

You see, the following sets are nothing BUT common and uncommon cards: Arabian Nights, Antiquities, the Dark, Fallen Empires, Homelands and Chronicles. The last four expansions do not pose any significant problems, but the first two do! Arabian Nights and Antiquities allow some rather nasty cards into the mix.

So in the LANDS category, I am going to look at cards that generally help you win overall. Sometimes, rather unfairly…

This card is super-broken and hard to handle. The card creates mana, makes a creature, and can pump itself making it harder to kill off. This card isn’t so bad against the red player with so much burn, but this card can make room for more utility cards as it could still count as a “land” in the land slot.

Here is my theory: instead of running 24 swamps in your mono-black, land-destruction deck, why don’t you run 20 swamps and 4 Mishra

Yep. You heard me. Some guy is going to play with one or more of these puppies in Peasant Magic. It makes me sick. One is bad enough, but four is ridiculous. I say this with all-due sincerity (since some of my teammates might be these players) that I ask that no one bring these into the Peasant Magic tournaments.

Put simply, four copies of such a broken card goes against the philosophy of the tournament. Every deck could benefit from a card engine this powerful. There is no way that a deck should cost that much in this format anyway. People playing without them are playing with a severe handicap. I feel like throwing rocks when I see them come into play. “Peasants unite against the tyrant! Down with the aristocracy!” What will happen to the integrity to the format when the Peasant purists see all of the wealth in the top 8? I don’t think these cards help the health of the format.

To counteract this, I will be playing to beat the Library in many ways. This next season of Peasant Magic will be filled with these special lands just to see how abusive they really are. Trust me, if there are too many decks with these special lands in them, they will be banned or restricted in the future for the health of the environment. However, since the format is so new, you may have to sift through some of the bad matches to learn about the synergy yourself.

In conclusion, I encourage all Peasant players to pick up four Strip Mine

s for the sideboard. Let’s kill these pricey Peasants with pauper-priced cards!

Until next time, keep searching through those common boxes…
