CardShark Content - Marcus Anderson (7/9/2002)

I can’t wait for GenCon’s Master of Peasant Magic tournament! After you see Johnny Lai’s report about the Pez tourney at Origins, you might want to go after that plains-player! Origins kicks off the metagame for block constructed. To a lesser extent, Origins will do the same for Peasant Magic. In this article, I will talk about the red mage. Even though there was only one sligh deck at Origins, it got second place WITHOUT A SIDEBOARD!

OK spuds, here are the rules of Peasant Magic:

1 – This is NOT an article about type 2 or ANY sanctioned format. Consider it a cheap-ass Type 1 (kinda…)

2 – This is for the casual gamer. Do you like originality? Do you like saving money? Do you like older cards? Do you want to play a tournament where rogue decks rule? Peasant Magic may be your calling!

3 – The deck and sideboard should be ALL commons except for 5 uncommon cards.

4 – The card must have been on the common sheet once to be considered common (for example: Fountain of Youth

6 – The official card rarity and errata list is at the Crystal Keep (www.crystalkeep.com).

7 – You will resist buying four Libraries of Alexandria and playing them in this format! (my friend will prove to you that four of these babies are JUST PLAIN WRONG – you have been warned…) Ok, you better run Strip Mine

I feel red is the color to beat (or at least test against). My fear of this color has blinded me to testing and building against it. I said in the last article that if I couldn’t beat red, I would join the team of “burn and goblin”. As the time grows near, I am still wondering if my guesses towards red are well founded.

Testing red and black extensively (black being my favorite color) has made me worry about white. My sideboard choices hope to handle this situation. I will write articles summarizing the Peasant decks and present the sideboard choices from the players. Now, let’s get past what I am GOING to do and get to what you want to know now.

RED DECKS:

Red decks or Anti-Red decks seemed like the only choice last year at GenCon. Unfortunately, this was VERY common knowledge and people were ready for decks that tapped mountains. Anti-red was rampant and took first place (the deck was named Red Hate too – go figure)! This year, since sideboards will be allowed, the white player will have many more tricks up their sleeve. However, this doesn’t write out these goblin and burn decks.

The first deck we should look at is the highest placing red deck last year:

(which may make a comeback in this format – shudder), I played a burn deck at a PTQ. It was great to have 8 anti-blue cards in the side just waiting to thwart blue and their plans. Needless to say, I won my share, but I did not place in the top 8 that day. I remember facing a lot of other anti-tide decks that day and I could not pull off the win with my anti-tide deck of my own.

However, the Peasant field is much more burn friendly. Here are my choices in my burn deck:

gives this deck a solution to deal with the #1 problem with burn: you will eventually run out of steam (or heat in this case). Many players would take 5 points of damage versus the possibility of having you draw three huge burn spells. Usually, you use all of your burn in the early game and you play a top-decking game with your opponent to see what threats can surface first.

Important rulings for the card: The ´´damage can't be prevented´´ statement overrides all forms of preventing damage. Damage prevention spells and abilities can still be played, they just don't do anything. [Judgment FAQ 2002/05/28]

Four of these spells come in for the second game against the white mage. You use them when your hand is full and you want the heavens to rain fire! Proceed as normal until that dreaded Circle of Protection:Red hits the table. Then you can load up your hand and play everything at the end of their turn. Surprise! This deck is Burn-go.

Since black was such a heavy hitter (with discard galore) the red mage needs to consider the ULTIMATE MADNESS BURN SPELL. Well, it is not exactly like madness, but it is really bad for the opponent.
