CardShark Content - Matt Carpenter (5/23/2005)

On the day of May 10 2005, my brother (James Carpenter) and I went to our local gaming store, Altered States Game and Hobby, to enter in an “Extended Battle Pit Tournament.” We entered the tournament just because in the store flyer it said that if you go to three or more “Extended Battle Pit Tournament’s” you’d get $20 store credit. Since it was only $2 to enter and held on every Tuesday of this month we didn’t hesitate to make ourselves a couple extended decks. This was my brother’s first tournament and this was my first “one on one” tournament, my friend and I played in a couple 1.5 team tournaments in the past.

My brother made his own version of the “Red Deck Wins.” I on the other hand went with good old elves, I don’t really have a name for mine. Here’s what was in my deck, I don’t know what my brother’s deck consisted of because he soon took his apart after the tournament to re-construct it:

I’m not quite sure how my brother did but I’ll tell you how I did. The tournament consisted of four rounds, whoever wins 2 out of 3 games wins the round. My first round was against a younger kid that I beat 2-0, I’m not sure what deck he was playing because he never was able to put anything out. In the second I think he put a Juggernaut

, which is a 5/3 artifact creature for 4 that must attack each turn if able, but that soon found its way to the graveyard.

In the second round I didn’t do all that well, the round went 2-1 in my opponent’s favor. The type of deck my opponent was using was a Psychatog

deck. My opponent beat me down the first game, but in the second game he was having some mana issues so I luckily won that game and the third game he beat me down some more.

In the third round it was my brother and I, what a coincidence. Luckily I won the round 2-1. The first game I overran him with elves, beating him. The second game I wasn’t so lucky with either land or creatures (I forget), so he ended up beating me. This was cool for him because when he and I were practicing before the tournament started, he couldn’t beat me. And in the third game elves came to the rescue, helping me win the round.

At this time it was past 8:30 at night and it was the fourth round. I didn’t do as well as I was hoping to, my opponent won 2-0. I’m not sure on what kind of deck he was using but I can only remember one card, Triskelion

out both games making my elves look like play toys.

Now it’s the day of May 17 2005, the second out of three tournaments’ to go to. This was an exciting tournament, sixteen people entered the tournament including my brother and I. This was one of the best tournaments I’ve ever been to, mainly because I did really well in it. In fact I technically won the tournament. During the first tournament I noticed that almost everyone was playing blue or tri-colored deck that contained blue. So I decided to switch up my deck a little. Here’s my new extended deck list:

so I gain four life and I blocked it with a 1/1 elf leaving me with two life. I won because he forgot that the Ghoul had fear and he also could pump it up one time putting me down to zero but he didn’t realize until we were already shuffling up for next game. The second game he won on turn two! Finally it was the third game and got ahead of himself, removing his deck too soon, unfortunately he played Exhume
