Power of the Planeswalkers - Matthew Cocker (10/5/2007)

So as you all know, we have now met our five planeswalkers. Now each of these beings has extreme potential to swing the game in your favour. I am going to bring you three decks. Each Planeswalker has three abilities, for the purpose of this article I am going to assume that you understand how a planeswalker can use their abilities, if not please refer to “PLANESWALKER RULES/FAQ”. The decks that I have developed here are focused on each planeswalker's third and most powerful ability.

Loyalty 6

So it is obvious that Chandra can deal a massive amount of damage to a player and devastate their creatures at the same time. But just wiping half of an opponents life in one go isn’t quite enough, to really enjoy the power that this card has to offer, so have a look at this deck list and I’ll walk you through the idea.

. Most aggro decks will be helpless, and control deck should struggle when nothing needs to target them.

Hopefully you can use or modify this strategy nicely so it can work for you. In any case I would love to hear your takes on how to best use Chandra.

Loyalty 6

Once again it is obvious the high power ability gives a huge swing in the tempo of the game, but to be truly devastating you need to ensure there are a large number of creatures in the graveyard. Obviously Wrath effects are a good way of doing this, but it rather depends on your opponent playing lots of creatures. Luckily there is another card in Standard right now that will do the job nicely that takes the options away from your opponent.

has always been more popular with the casual crowd, but I very much hope that paired with Liliana it sees some serious tournament play in the near future. This deck admittedly has only one win condition, however, I believe that against the aggro deck this deck will win, against a control deck that is designed to slow the game down, this strategy will allow a large enough swing in board strength that you should end up winning here if you can bring the pieces to play. The worse thing for this deck would be a creatureless combo deck. Hopefully if this was the case then you would recognize it and simply continue to force discard to limit the combo player ability to get their desired hand.

Loyalty 3

Now to my mind Garruk’s large ability is the least obviously powerful, having said that I think that Garruk on the whole is extremely powerful, has mana accelerates with no draw back, and makes beast friends for a very small drawback. I personally think that Garruk goes really well with lots of friends, so I want to put him in a deck where all the creatures bring mates to the party.

s as the way to make the most of Garruk’s ability. If you can pump out the 1/1’s then make them into 4/4 tramplers then I figure it is a good deal. into a serious threat. Now this is the only deck that I don’t believe that just racing to the required loyalty then using his ability is the way to go. I think that in this case, building up enough loyalty to go two or three times, or to have cranked out a few beasts would be the way to go. Nacatl War-Pride in this deck just ices the cake, if you allow your deck to build up steam, then once you are ready to attack, they have to let the damage from everything but the Nacatl go through.

Feel free to contact me about anything you think my decks could use, or do without. I’m sure that they could use tweaking, but I’m also confident that they would make fun casual decks. If not (with tweaking) serious decks that could do some damage. Even if all this article does is provoke people to stop thinking about the planeswalkers in isolation then I will be happy.
