CardShark Content - Matthew Sablan (7/21/2004)

I've been in Virginia playing Magic for quite some time, most of the summer, actually. In a place where Booster Drafts go for $14 and change, you can eat through your gaming allowance in a few short weeks. Which is why, when I returned to Delaware, I was pleasantly surprised to be home for the Days of Knights Sealed Deck Friday Night. Days of Knights has a gaming room in the back that feels like it’s pulled from one of those old movies. Posters cover the walls, and there's a raucous group of players in there from the time the Sealed tournament started, till when it ended.

Another reason I like going home to Delaware is that you can get Booster packs for close to 3.00$, as opposed to closer to 4.00$ in Virginia. I was even told that booster drafts cost about 9.50$ to 10.00$. I was in Limited heaven. But, back to the matter at hand. This would be my first Sealed Deck since the Pre-Release of Fifth Dawn. So I was a bit antsy.

My overall record was 2-2-0 in the four round Swiss style event. No prize for me, what a shame. However, I did score a 4/4 Flying Angel token for 1$ and a foil island for fifty cents, and a Green Bringer for about 2$. I think that worked out well for the collector in me. And here is what I ended up with as my Sealed Deck; the packs have never been nearly so kind to me in a Draft.

Ignoring land, I was playing a Green / Red beat down deck, with judicious use of a Whispersilk Cloak

The Beacons are best used early and often, unless you know something worse is coming along. Had I played it the first turn I could to burn away a creature or my opponent’s life total, I could have won if I drew it again. It was unlikely, but it would have been a trade that helped me.

Most times, it isn’t best to wait to entwine Barbed Lightening. If you must kill that creature now, pass up on the three damage to your opponent.

had Protection from Red and that he should be gaining life because I never for a moment thought I would lose. Because I was trying to be the nice guy, I lost the third match. Had I played the game like the competition it was meant to be, I’d have at least two more packs in my pocket, and maybe five, and a slightly higher DCI ranking.

So just remember, there’re times to be a rules lawyer, and there’re times to just have fun. The closer you get to the end of the tournament, the more likely you’re playing against serious opponents, who should know what they’re doing (if you’re winning.) It’s ok to penalize them for not following the rules. It’s not cool to correct everything six-year old Jimmy does because its “in the rules.” In one draft I was playing a kid who was using all of his cards, and he would forget things (like to untap his lands, creatures, and draw a card.) Those are things that must happen, so I reminded him. Anything with a may, I would remind him about as well. When I played the guy who said not a single word while playing, I didn’t remind him. One, he was slightly less fun to play against, mainly since I didn’t have a clue what he was doing, and the second reason is that he knew what he was doing. He knew after the first game he lost because didn’t regenerate the Pewter Golem
