CardShark Content - Matthew Sablan (11/17/2004)

Well, after my first event as our C player, I think I’ve learned some interesting things about the format. First, and foremost, luck has a factor, but so does skill. I’ve been used to marginalizing the luck factor in Limited Events, since I believe a good player can play with any card pool and make something happen. When I was sitting looking at our card pool this Sunday that boasted four or five Crushing Pain

So, in our four rounds we went 1-2 with a bye (so, technically, 2-2, but you and I know that there’s a totally different thing between being given a win and earning it.) And, boy, did we earn it. Our first game as Team Alternate Win Condition could not have helped thoroughly show what luck can do to a team. All of us were running 16 to 18 lands, and our A player mulliganed to six both his games, and never saw a third land. Our B player, who had the land searchers, got to see his Thousand-Legged Kami and Sakura-Tribe Elder

, I eventually managed to clear the board of the pesky Zubera and make them stay dead. Then the process of slow removal began, and that was that. My second game against my opponent was a much better game, with plays, in turn order, of: Retainer, Sustainer, Blademaster, Nagao, Takeno. She conceded, and we lost 2-1.

Our second game, against Team Powerful Fighters, was our one legitimate victory. And I kid you not, it was a ridiculously hard fight. Living up to our name, our B playerfound a new way to win. And that was with his soulshifters. He had originally taken them because they were quality creatures, but his Scuttling Death

, though Caged, still can offs Hikari, giving me Goku the Unjust- a total of 7 pinging damage to creatures a turn. Masako dies in glorious combat with the 3/1 first striking spirit. He just can’t win a race where isn’t allowed any creatures, and my team pulls off the win. For the record, our A player gets stuck on three mana in the two games he loses. True to our name, we won in ways our decks were not meant to win in, or with an alternate win condition.

Match three we are stomped terribly by a team with pro-points to their name. Nothing of interest, save a Nagao with Oathkeeper swinging at me occurs. We were simply outclassed by decks with much better things. Each person we played had a deck like ours, but simply with better stuff. Better soulshifting, better blue, better everything. Except I did have Takeno, and my opponent didn’t. But that doesn’t really amount to much when I’m dead by turn 5.

So, what did we learn? I learned that I’ve been overvaluing early drops. Jukai Messenger

Synergy, something I’ve always appreciated while drafting, is even more important here in Kamigawa. Take soulshifting for an example. The more creatures with soulshift you have, the more often the ability will trigger, the more use you get out of it.
