::The Scenario::

A few kids get together and construct a new “secret” deck that abuses a few trash rares.

Thanks to Neutral Ground, (www.neutralground.net) and a couple of crazy kids at a JSS, the standard environment is thrown for a loop from the rise of its newest comeuppance: Balancing Tings. As mentioned earlier, Neutral Ground posted the innovative deck builder’s articles and it seems that JSSer’s everywhere are flocking to the idea of launching a balanced Terravore

::In The Beginning::

The idea shares its roots with a deck made popular last year dubbed Nether-Haups. Nether-Haups featured the elusive Nether Spirit

in the box at the top, right-hand corner, you should probably be asking yourself a few questions. How does the deck work? What are its weaknesses and its strengths? Is this deck a fluke? (While I’m not questioning the credibility of the JSS, I think it’s justifiable to question whether the deck is good enough to succeed in the field.) And, the obvious, do I even own a Balancing Act

Like its predecessor, the deck runs high in the land department and for good reason. Because of its explosive nature, it’s imperative that the caster has enough mana to fuel a swift assault and then be able to draw land after the storm. The use of sac lands make it kamikaze to cast a Balancing Act

[2WW], a new twist on an old card. Kudos to the deck builder on this card, as most people couldn’t find a place for these in their trade binders.

Fire/Ice [1R/1U] is touted as one of the best split cards available and for good reason. This card lets you slow down an opponent’s mana drive by either “icing” their lands or using the red side to burn their elves and birds. The card can finish off the few last points of life or tap down a pesky blocker. I see no reason why this card should not be included.

::The Denouement::

The deck’s strengths? Obviously this is a deck that can play itself to some extent. As mentioned before, if your opponent isn’t with island you might want to start thinking about your next opponent. Shock

value is a component to this decks initial success as well. The deck can sometimes just flat out win. I’m sure this deck will make it into everyone’s gauntlet of test decks.

The deck’s weaknesses? While the deck does run 26 lands, it has a shaky many base due to the fact that they come into play and must be sacked before they are effective. A player using Recoil

s will target the lands early so as to slow down their opponent to a crawl. Likewise, Fire/Ice should be used for the same reason.

The deck runs a high amount of land so at times that’s all you’ll draw. Twenty-six mana could possibly be taken down to a slim twenty-five, but I haven’t taken the time to test the deck too much. Duress

. In short, the surprise value has helped this deck perform as well as it has been; as soon as one sees a sack land the secrets out. This doesn’t mean that this deck is bad though, not by far. It just means the wielder has to turn off autopilot and play the deck.

The deck really needs no justification as it has earned thousands of dollars for its young wielders. With new decks crawling out of the woodwork for JSS it will be exciting to see what happens at the Masters. Will the pros be able to create a deck with as powerful a force as the new generation of JSSer’s have? Time will tell and the challenge has been issued to Magic’s “elite”.

PS If you don’t read my stuff at CCGPrime, then you should know that I’m starting a Type One mailing list. Drop me a line if you’d be interested in joining. This list will be mainly about Type One, but will include any topic du jour from time to time. I invite you to join up if you play casually or competitively or even if you don’t play T1 at all; there’s no better time to learn and I find that a fresh perspective on the format is often just what’s needed. Just drop me a line with T1 mailing list as the subject.

Until then…
