CardShark Content - Matthew Smith (7/14/2002)

I must first say that while I had a good time this year at Origins, and I’ll be coming back again next year, the way the convention was run, well…sucked. While last year it took an amazing fifteen minutes for me to register and sign up for my events, I was waiting (one of the first) in the registration line for 45 minutes this year. The event line? Don’t even ask.

Arriving early on Thursday morning has its perks, and then it also has some disadvantages. For one, check in at the Crown Plaza isn’t until three o’clock, which means there’ll be no “tidying up” after our seven hour drive from Michigan. While some may disagree, or not really care, I throw that in the disadvantage category.

But, since we are indeed early, the group I was with decided to use that to our advantage and myself and a couple others started mingling around the CCG room. The trading started, and while I wasn’t sure exactly what was super hot in the T2 scene, I’m absolutely sure I know now that it is the end of the weekend. But that’s a different article.

So the Vintage tournament starts at 4:00 and I’m waiting around, trying to stay awake until I can counter some spells and ruin some lives via serial-killa Morphling

’s Olle Rade in the finals. The point being, Mike Long knew Type One…in 1997.

I think that when I say Type One is the forgotten format, I do so with a bit of evidence at my disposal. I believe that most folks, even those who excelled at Type One when it was known as “normal”, still believe Type One to be a stagnant format. It is my understanding that the general populous believes Type One to be a static format because they believe that good cards in 1995 are still played now. That’s just not the case. While Amnesia

ruled the roost, the cards have just gotten downright better. I’m still convinced to this day that if a larger group of people played Type One, the metagame would be COMPLETELY different than it is now. The actual problem with the format is that there is no established metagame. A game without a metagame? What the heck do you mean?

Let’s say I’m a pro player and I’m preparing for a constructed event. I understand what decks are at the top of the game, because I’ve seen other reports and I’ve done some testing with my teammates. But the main testing I’ve done is with cards that hose the metagame. If I expect a lot of Quiet Speculation

. Then, I play the best deck of the field, and I tweak it some to give it the edge over all of the other best decks in the field. This can’t happen in Type One.

One Andrew Stokinger, of Team Academy fame, a pro tour player who—obviously an exceptional player, also played at the Origins Classic event. He chose to pilot a Grow deck, similar to the one touted by Pat Chapin and Mark Rosewater. For anyone who hasn’t tested in Type One, taking the advice of either of these two public figures would just make good sense. But this isn’t constructed, and you can’t just expect to find the BEST deck—or, if you do, even be able to play it appropriately for that matter. The Keeper deck of today is thought by most to be the best deck, but I think I can safely say that I’ve seen a lot of people, having no business to do so, lose with Psychatog

Of course, if I sit back here all Tan-Like on my pedestal, proclaiming that my deck is the best and I’m obviously better than any of these bums who’ve only won a few Pro Tours or something, then I might look like an elitist-ass. I’d obviously be an idiot—who can argue with the man who CREATED Keeper?

How did Miracle Gro fair? I didn’t see it after the third round and I believe Andrew eventually dropped from the tournament.

don’t help matters any. The first realization you have to make is that Gro was introduced in a Trix-laden field. It was the ultimate answer to a control type situation. When facing a Type One field you really have to be ready for anything and a lot of times your first few match-ups will be against aggressive decks. Lightning Bolt

, and the list goes on. You can expect to see these sorts of spells main deck, and you have to have enough counter/bounce/misdirection spells to protect your creatures and then save some of those to deal with…oh like a first turn Hippie or some such nonsense. If you get lucky enough to face control and combo decks all day long, you will probably do alright for yourself. But the Gro deck is really a metagame call. So what happens if there is no metagame?

A Stompy deck would give this deck a headache. Simply put, I don’t think Gro really has enough gas to make it competitive in Type One. I would rather play a Merfolk deck. I would definitely NOT play Super Gro. Here’s a list of what I was toying around with before Origins:

What I’m touting is that like any other format you have to put in the time to playtest—and oftentimes just play with cards because you like them. Playtesting can be next to impossible in Type One. Hopefully, as more and more people understand that it truly is the greatest format in Magic, this will eventually change. Of course change may be just what isn’t needed for Type One. I’d say that most of the beauty of playing in a Classic tournament is not knowing what you’ll play next. I’m not going to a tournament expecting to just play Quiet Spec decks all day, and I want to play every possible game I can.

Okay, on to an account of how the tournament went down.

So I’m trading, looking to try and upgrade my Moxes to beta, when my buddy tells me that the pairings are up for the first round. I make my way over and find that I’m not on the list. Apparently you have to sign a form, even though I registered the event up front, to play in the tournament. Why the hell did I bother going through the event line? It seemed to me that the two factions, PES and GAMA didn’t really need each other at all. PES ran a smooth show, as they always do, and let me get into the tournament…with a first round bye. Now normally you’d say alright, a first round bye is cool, but this is Type Fun. I want to play!

Okay, Round two of this 6 round, 36 man event. (Gencon hosted a 64 man event last year on the first day. After a grueling 7 rounds of Type Fun I managed to go undefeated with my mono blue deck…let’s see what I can do at Origins this year.)

Round Two I play against a four color deck which I really don’t know how it works. I slapped an early Back to Basics

down both games and he had no way to deal with it either game. This gave me a chance to walk around and see what new decks were out there. One thing I noticed: I was really the only person trying to abuse the wish in Type One. I personally think that Cunning Wish

One deck that I thought I’d see a lot more of was the Dragon combo deck. Evidently no one thought it was worthy enough to play yet. I did see one person playing with it, and I think he did manage to make top eight. Here’s the list I was messing around with before Origins:

The deck didn’t seem to impress me too much. I like the idea of the combo; it’s seems easy enough to get off against aggressive decks, but the main reason why I didn’t play the deck is because I thought it lacked the power to beat control. Without more playtesting I wasn’t going to take the risk. The deck impresses me, it just needs more fine tuning.

The third round I faced off against Keeper and won the first game thanks to the best card in my deck, Back to Basics

. The one concept that he doesn’t grasp is that while he does indeed have more counters than I do, I have to mana base to play spells safely, while unless he draws the mox, mox, island hand, I’m pretty sure I’ll win the important counterspell wars. While I think his deck was better than mine, I’m sure I was the better player, and so I won the last two games. I ended up facing the same deck the next day, and pulled off an amazing win during the second game, but lost the match. This inevitably left me with the only possible answer: take out the Accumulated Knowledge

So I offered the draw before we began, mainly because we had to drive all night long and I’m dead tired, but he refused to accept it. Regardless, I end up taking second place which nets me 24 packs. The deck that won was very interesting indeed. It had the much talked about Illusionary mask-Phyrexian Dread
