DOH!!

Okay, Okay, so I’m a numbskull and didn’t do a once over at the deck list I found from Sideboard for my latest article, A New Deck on the Block: Hunting Grounds

. After getting about, oh, 20 or so e-mails I decided to make a public retraction to let everyone know that, yes, I to believe that land is good, and I don’t normally like to cheat.

The list I took from the Sideboard is evidently 5 Island

s are indeed in your deck…But for the records, the deck after my modifications does indeed possess a FULL 24 lands—even though it seems as though the general consensus agrees that 25 is probably the right number.

So, I apologize for bastardizing Hsai’s deck by presenting false information. My intentions were to only revel in the goodness of the rogue theory, not to mislead any persons who wished to copy the deck off the Net.

One last thing: Was the writing that bad? I don’t put much stock into the rating scale here (if people are really interested they’ll usually e-mail you a heads up to let you know—and I know this playa’s got some haters out there) but let’s keep the thing honest. I’m not sure what the intended use of the scale is, but I’m guessing that it’s to let a guy know how his writing is.

Thanks for reading, and I think I’ll take the Ferrett’s advice and work on some OBC tech for next week’s article.

Viva,

Matthew Smith

*** NOW, ON WITH THE ARTICLE ***

You wake up at StarCity. You wake up at Brainburst. You wake up at the Sideboard. You point and click, expecting the ordinary, absorbing the reality. Until one day you are offered a plate of salad and an Evian.

Only…you’re a “Meat and Potatoes” person.

The commonplace is fine for a winner but the rogue builder abhors the run of the mill. The rogue will spend hours listlessly scrolling through card boxes and errata to find something new.

Something…rogue.

The rogue builder is at his best with the release of a new expansion. Treading in the untapped waters of a new set, the rogue extracts pearls from the depths of the sea. In fact, many times the rogue will do so no matter the price. Simply put, the rogue revels in the joy of his opponent’s reactions. If he happens to gain a win, then so much the better.

I woke up at the Sideboard the other day and shot over to Grand Prix Taipei. Alas, a strike in the armor of the beast, a fellow rogue has won the whole damn thing! As Josh Bennett so cleverly stated, it almost never happens that the most creative deck at a tournament walks away with the crown. But today it did just that.

? Did this Hsia guy cheat or something, I mean he had no byes. If not, who the heck did he play to win with this pile of Judgment cards? Is this the changing face of Standard?

After testing the deck I can only say a few words: the deck has…potential. I have to believe that Sheng Hsun Hsia knows this deck backwards, as it is somewhat hard to play. One must know when to counter, draw, or Wrath. It took me a few games, but I made a few observations.

#1. The deck really has to get to Threshold. With the lean towards faster decks in the environment, (I’m talking about U/G and WW), the deck can only counter so much. Wrath of God

There are 26 blue spells in the deck, many of them requiring double blue. There are 9 green spells in the deck and 9 mana sources for green. There are 10 white spells, Wraths are double white, and 13 mana sources for white. And lastly, the two Monasteries, of which I am not a big fan of—see rule #1.
