CardShark Content - Michael Adelson (11/21/2004)

Champions of Kamigawa has proven to be one of the most fun sets to draft in a while. There are several strong cards and archetypes, but nothing utterly dominant. Strangely enough though, one very strong archetype has not seen much attention from the pros. That archetype is B/W Samurai. The goal of this article is to outline the cards that fit into this deck, and their relative importance.

Overview: The B/W samurai deck is strong for several reasons. White and Black are both very deep in Champions, so the times when you have to take something unplayable or off color should not be too common. Also, since the deck is not dependent on any specific cards, you will not be forced to fight over those cards. Finally, the deck is fast and can overrun its opponents with cheap bushido creatures, yet can play the late game as well with its strong synergies and removal.

Note: The pick orders below are very rough, feel free to disagree or change them while drafting, especially if your deck is lacking in either removal or creatures.

This card is amazing. It can be used early so you can keep attacking, and then reused later on should you need to deal with a dragon or other strong creature. The cage also gets around soulshift and dragon triggers. A first pick.

Unless you are lucky enough to get a dragon or kabuto moth, this will most likely be one of your only fliers. Luckily, however, he is quite strong, and like most samurai, good both on attack and defense. Blue decks will have trouble facing this, as he can run over many of their smaller fliers.

by itself, as he is not a samurai until he becomes Kenzo, the Hardhearted.

Oathkeeper: Oathkeeper, Takeno’s Daisho
Cost: 3
Type: Legendary Artifact — Equipment
Pow/Tgh:
Rules Text: Equipped creature gets +3/+1.
Whenever equipped creature is put into a graveyard from play, return that card to play under your control if it’s a Samurai.
When Oathkeeper, Takeno’s Daisho is put into a graveyard from play, remove equipped creature from the game.
Equip 2

If you are lucky enough to see this rare piece of equipment, you should most definitely play it. In fact, Oathkeeper can win so many games by itself that I would rate it above every common and uncommon, except perhaps Nagao, when drafting a B/W samurai deck.

Lands: It is usually preferable to run 17-18 lands in the deck, as you do not want to miss a land drop early, and you have plenty of ways to spend extra mana late game between equip costs and pumping abilities.

Well, that’s it. I hope you enjoyed this walkthrough of this powerful Champions draft archetype.
