So you're not a control player because you don't have the patience or interest in sitting on a handful of counters and Milling someone to death, but you don't want to play R/G because of all the expensive rares in it...boy do I have an entertaining deck for you to toy with :-)

If you've read my previous articles you probably know that my local metagame is usually control heavy. We have a lot of older players who, in general, are the ones who like to sit down and tap Island

builds making the T8, last Friday offered a startling change of pace.

It all began innocently enough on Monday, which on this particular week was a draft day. After draft several of us noodled about with some fresh Type II ideas for the heck of it and one fellow was using a very speedy U/G build that looked like it was not only fast but a ton of fun to play with. Immediately my pal Mike G. and I started working on our own build of the deck to try out on Friday.

Surprise, surprise, when we got there on Friday the field ended up with only 2 players using U/W control while *9* were running variants on the U/G beats deck! Not anticipating such insanity I'd failed to even bring along COP: Green as a *possible* SB card for U/W and ended up having a pretty miserable night of it. So what's this U/G deck look like and why does it win?

First a sample list:

s. It uses most every bomb uncommon Blue and Green have and it uses them all very efficiently.

So why does the deck win? Take a look at the list folks, the highest casting cost card is 4 so it's almost as speedy as Frog but all of it's spells are undercosted for the effect. You have the 4/4 Werebear

and Mongrel.

The land base is *very* tight on this deck but you can function for quite a long time on only 2 or 3 lands so that usually doesn't end up being an issue, especially if you can get Compulsion

out and active. Just remember that with only 20 in the deck if you get a 1 land hand taking the mulligan is more critical than ever because it could be a *very* long time before you draw that critical second one.

- a discard *and* drawing aid. It's usually the engine that will give your deck an advantage against other aggro decks and can additionally give control decks fits (particularly the U/W deck I listed last week, more on this in a bit)

because it's cheaper at 4 mana and stays in play causing probs until it's either removed or your opponent ends up dead which given the size of the critters in the deck, shouldn't take long. The big disadvantage is that it *is* an enchantment and it *is* being used after sideboarding so your opponent could very well SB in some enchantment removal which would nullify the spell. That said even if they are I wouldn't be overly concerned since *if they are* they're already putting themselves in a hole by assuming a defensive posture instead of an offensive one which is what this deck should *always* be going for.

is certainly an option though. Despite it's one time effect that effect will often be enough to end the game if it resolves. The disadvantages, and why I don't use this card, is it's casting cost pushes the mana curve to new heights and a well timed Aether Burst

How does it stack up against the opposition?

R/G Fat: They have fat, you have fat. They have burn, you have card drawing. End result: A pretty darn even match. The creatures that R/G generates on a whole are smaller than what your deck's are *after Threshhold* but before is the critical time period. Early game you have to play it defensively because everything they're playing is larger and more dangerous than your stuff. If you can get the match to the point where you're at Threshhold though the tide swings seriously in your favor. Everything *you have* is now larger and the card advantage your deck can generate when you combine Compulsion
