Deathtouch Snipers - Michael Macfarlane (2/16/2008)

When I was younger (yesterday), I liked to pop balloons- usually with needles. It was fascinating that something so tiny would have such an effect upon something so much larger. Now, that I’ve grown up (ha! Ask my wife- she’ll tell you otherwise- probably due to this addiction to Magic), I like to use the same theory with Magic. This comes in the form of a little bow, and a mechanic called deathtouch. Well, because I said Peasant format was next, I’ll throw my original Peasant Snipers at you, and then let you mull over the Type 2 optional deck rearrangements.

For those who aren’t familiar with Peasant format, it’s a lower-powered version of Magic. The rules are: no rares, up to 5 uncommons, and there’s a small list of banned cards. The rest are commons. Nice and small, most of the time. It’s a nice challenge if you want to take it up- No Dust Elemental

kicking your trash, just mostly little guys getting the spotlight. My group even had a Peasant King tourney, which was just awesome. I’ll write another article about that sometime soon.

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, elves are powerful like nothing… oh yeah, there are those Sliver creature thingys (frickin’ frackin’ slivers… come on, you hate ‘em too). Elves also have amazing synergy. In Lorwyn, out of the tribes offered, my group has come to dislike elves almost like slivers. It’s those 2 cards that make Lorwyn elves nuts- Imperious Perfect

, the official first deathtouch creature. All he needed to do was deal damage anywhere or anytime to a creature (popping of balloons- can you hear them?), and the opponent’s graveyard would start to fill up! I immediately found a couple of red enchantments to throw his damage around, but settled on the colorless Viridian Longbow

. I’d always moved that bow to different decks, then along came the deathtouch archer. Thorny (go with the flow, please) needs only to ping one little point of damage to any non-indestructible creature, and the latter creature says. “Wow. One friggin’ point. Whoop..d……y……..” *gasp.

Now, with Lorwyn, there are plenty of deathtouch creatures to enjoy. Much popping can be shared.

The big thing to remember is that equipping is as a sorcery- so to kill multiple times, the bow must be used during your main phase(es), where you pay the cost of 3 to equip to another creature, and tap that creature to deal the point of damage, then wash, rinse, repeat for as much mana as you can afford. I’ve had 2 bows in play, and was able to kill 5 creatures each turn.
